Today, many of us are being challenged to build increasingly complex applications tha<\/span>t not only deliver insightful visualizations and metrics, but that are essentially self-explanatory in this age of remote work. The\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>splash screen<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0has become ubiquitous across the internet to pass essential information to users about usage or compliance before they enter an application<\/span>\u00a0or web page<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dashboards made with\u202f<\/span>ArcGIS Dashboards<\/span><\/a>\u202fcan be a compelling tool for displaying the<\/span>se<\/span>\u00a0metrics\u00a0<\/span>and visualizations<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>However, often we\u2019ve configured a specific purpose or workflow within the dashboard that we want users to follow<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The Side Panel widget is great for describing data sources and\u00a0<\/span>methodology<\/span>, but readers aren\u2019t forced to read it before exploring the content<\/span>. Additionally, many users<\/span>\u00a0are required to put an organizationally mandated entry\u00a0<\/span>window<\/span>\u00a0to grab users<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0attention and inform them about\u00a0<\/span>an\u00a0<\/span>app<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> usage terms,\u00a0<\/span>intended use<\/span>, or even specific viewing instructions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ArcGIS Experience Builder<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

ArcGIS Experience Builder<\/span><\/a>\u202fis a new way of building web apps, providing a drag-and-drop workflow for creating powerful information products. With it, you can add in text, media, multiple maps, surveys, and other types of content, all within one unified web experience.\u00a0<\/span>It can even be used to enhance\u00a0<\/span>other applications<\/span><\/i>, as outlined in this example.\u00a0<\/span>It is adaptable and mobile friendly,\u00a0<\/span>and with the newest release<\/span> (June 2020)<\/span>, it lets you create highly tailored\u00a0<\/span>windows<\/span>\u00a0that you can use to inform individuals about an application before they use it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With the new\u00a0<\/span>window or\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>splash screen<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0capability<\/span>\u00a0in Experience Builder<\/span>, users can easily create landing dialogs for incoming users to ensure that important information about data permissions<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0general guidance when using the application<\/span>, and even terms and conditions for the application are seen and acknowledged before entering the app<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting Started<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The first step is to build\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0dashboards in the\u202f<\/span>ArcGIS Dashboards<\/span><\/a>\u202fapplication<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This example is a dashboard that looks at\u00a0<\/span>popular<\/span>\u00a0locations\u00a0<\/span>around Amman, Jordan<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for foreign travelers to visit<\/span>. We want\u00a0<\/span>users entering the application to understand how our data was sourced and <\/span>validated and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>ensure that they agree to our terms of use before using the application<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once the dashboard\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>created<\/span>, open\u202f<\/span>ArcGIS Experience Builder<\/span><\/a>. Because this\u00a0<\/span>will be a simple Experience Builder application, select the blank full screen template.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The next steps<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>easy to follow:\u00a0<\/span>In the builder,<\/span>\u00a0add a basic Embed widget by dragging and dropping it into the main workspace. Click on\u00a0<\/span>the new frame and select the option to enlarge it to\u00a0<\/span>full-screen<\/span>.
