SafeGraph is a data company that provides data for all kinds of uses\u2014demographic analysis, advertising, real estate, and more. I\u2019ve noticed on their website that they say \u201cwe\u2019re a data company and that\u2019s all we do,\u201d which I think shows how devoted they are to precise and high-quality data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yeah true, if that\u2019s all they do, they must be pretty good at it! But what\u2019s different about their Places data?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, here\u2019s where it gets interesting. SafeGraph defines a \u201cplace\u201d as anywhere people spend money or time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oh, so it\u2019s based on transactions in the real world?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, SafeGraph\u2019s data is based on transactions. That could be through credit card purchases or mobile device movement. I\u2019ll send you a link to read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safegraph.com\/points-of-interest-poi-data-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transaction-based data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ohh, got it, thanks. That\u2019s really cool! So is SafeGraph new to Business Analyst?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Actually, not entirely. Before, Business Analyst users could add SafeGraph data to the Web App through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis-marketplace\/listing\/products\/3425348e4bee4059af2b353e52df43c2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ArcGIS Marketplace<\/a>. Now, SafeGraph data is built right into Business Analyst so it\u2019s available easily for workflows like Business and Facilities Search. Now here\u2019s a question I probably should have led with\u2026 Why should I use SafeGraph data in my work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s always important to understand your data and why it\u2019s useful. There are some great aspects of working with SafeGraph data. For instance, an excellent perk of SafeGraph data is the ability to show full business addresses and phone numbers in reports, infographics, and exported attribute tables.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oh wow, that\u2019s really useful. Tell me more!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, you can also take advantage of helpful context, like brand affiliation and industry categories when evaluating sites and opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And this data in Business Analyst will be updated quarterly, is that correct?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Correct!<\/p>\n<p><strong>So this is data based on transactions. What does that mean for accuracy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From what I read in SafeGraph\u2019s data documentation and talking to others, I understand that SafeGraph has developed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safegraph.com\/#POI-database-sources\">a number of tactics<\/a> to refine their data collection. Businesses are defined as polygons rather than centroids, allowing for a high level of accuracy. It also means you can see POI that are located within another POI (such as a restaurant within an airport). The machine learning model will understand that the pings coming at 9 am most likely means the phones are visiting the big box store rather than the bar?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, that\u2019s the idea. SafeGraph also \u201ccleans\u201d their data, so that places like ATMs or home businesses located in residences aren\u2019t included.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ok, so how does privacy work with transaction-based data?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s such an important question! SafeGraph\u2019s data is ethically harvested. They scrub all personal information from device data and utilize home address information at the Census block group level only. Clusters of pings are created from anonymized mobile information using DBSCAN to remove personal identifying information. Here, I\u2019ll send you an article so you can learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/towardsdatascience.com\/dbscan-clustering-explained-97556a2ad556\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DBSCAN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The when<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>How and when should I use SafeGraph data in my work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Certain industries are going to find SafeGraph data especially useful. This is because SafeGraph data is generated based on store visits and in-person transactions. So, if you work in a sector where customers are frequently visiting your business, SafeGraph\u2019s Places data provides a high level of accuracy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What industries might be most interested in using SafeGraph data in their analyses?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So some industries, organized by NAICS categories, that I can think of\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Food services and drinking places<\/li>\n<li>Ambulatory health care services<\/li>\n<li>Personal and laundry services<\/li>\n<li>Religious, grantmaking, civic, professional, and similar organizations<\/li>\n<li>Repair and maintenance<\/li>\n<li>Food and beverage stores<\/li>\n<li>Educational services<\/li>\n<li>Miscellaneous store retailers<\/li>\n<li>Motor vehicle and parts dealers<\/li>\n<li>Credit intermediation and related activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Yep, seeing lots of in-person businesses on that list. For these folks, it seems like SafeGraph\u2019s USA Places data could be a major asset to their work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It could be! Having the option\u2014right inside Business Analyst\u2014to use this data is great, and provides a useful complement to the excellent data sources that are already in the software. I really think users are going to get a lot out of this addition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I agree. Can I ask one last question?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is the SafeGraph data available only for existing users?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SafeGraph data is available to both prospective and existing users.
