Let me show you around!\u00a0 You\u2019re going to make a scene, and I mean that in a good way.\u00a0 We\u2019re starting in 2D and taking it to 3D.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a GIS professional, you\u2019re cool too.\u00a0 You can do this in ArcGIS Pro, but maybe you\u2019re on an iPad or someone else\u2019s computer.\u00a0 Maybe this inspires you to do this with Notebooks!<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re going to go through a couple of steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>We\u2019re going to convert that table into a feature by using the location data in that table to put the points where they are on a map. This is called geocoding.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019re going to make a grid to count the points in. This is called a tessellation.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019re going to count those points in each grid cell. This is called aggregating points.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019re going to make sure the count translates well into a vertical height.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019re going to turn this 2D grid into a 3D visualization with extrusion.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019re going to save this and share this for the world to see your 3D scene.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Let\u2019s get started!<\/p>\n<p>The first thing is logging into your ArcGIS Online Organization and clicking \u201cMap\u201d at the top.<\/p>\n<p>I have this <a href=\"https:\/\/esriis-my.sharepoint.com\/:x:\/g\/personal\/phil7121_esri_com\/Ef_26ApOiL5LgabdXa_a3nsBNymgerLZxfGZPou7exAd4w?e=NLXGhI\">SampleAddresses.csv<\/a> file for you to try this with. Download it, and find where you\u2019ve downloaded it to.<\/p>\n<h2>Geocoding<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>With your starting map up, drag the <a href=\"https:\/\/esriis-my.sharepoint.com\/:x:\/g\/personal\/phil7121_esri_com\/Ef_26ApOiL5LgabdXa_a3nsBNymgerLZxfGZPou7exAd4w?e=NLXGhI\">SampleAddresses.csv<\/a> file into your map.<\/li>\n<li>The map viewer recognizes that you\u2019re trying to add this csv, and starts lining up geocoding information. It identifies that you\u2019re trying to add addresses, and if the fields are named appropriately, it\u2019ll line those up to geocoding services.\u00a0 You\u2019ll get more accurate results if you set the country that this data is set in (in this case, this is in Redlands, CA in the United States). You geocoded the table and you now have a point feature layer.<\/p>\n<h2>Create tessellation<\/h2>\n<p>In this section, we\u2019re going to create a grid (a tessellation) to count the total number of points within. We\u2019re actually going to create a tesselation out of hexagons because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/insider\/thematic-mapping-with-hexagons\/\">they tend to look and work better for summarization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Zoom into the area that you want the grids created over. You have hexagons all over your map now. Good! GIS folks call them \u2018hex bins\u2019. Onto the next section!<\/p>\n<h2>Aggregate Points<\/h2>\n<p>Now you\u2019re going to count the points inside of the hex bins, so that there will be a field in the hex bin attribute table with the count of the points that fall inside of each bin.<\/p>\n<p>Wait a minute.\u00a0 Looks like there are points that are hard to tell which hex bin they get counted in-\u00a0 What if they fall on the line?\u00a0 Are they counted in both? Interesting, but there is no such thing.\u00a0 Points and lines have no area, and they cannot overlap each other.\u00a0 If you\u2019re into that, it\u2019s good to introduce you to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Modifiable_areal_unit_problem\">Modifiable Areal Unit Problem<\/a>, as it does play a factor in approaching this kind of analysis.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Analysis, Summarize Data, Aggregate Points.<\/li>\n<li>Fill in these values in the analysis dialog:\n<ul>\n<li>Choose layer containing points to aggregate into areas: SampleAddressTable<\/li>\n<li>Choose layer containing aggregation areas: Polygon (and the layer you just created: RedlandsHexagons). You can actually generate the tessellation directly within this tool, but it\u2019s good to know how to complete the previous step.<\/li>\n<li>Uncheck \u201cKeep areas with no points\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Add statistics(optional). These will remain blank.\u00a0 If your address table had numeric data that you wanted summarized (money donated, for example), you can summarize that data here.<\/li>\n<li>Choose field to group by (optional) will remain blank.<\/li>\n<li>Result layer name: RedlandsHexCount<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click \u201cRun for Extrusion<\/h2>\n<p>Now you have hex bins with a count of points that fall inside of them.\u00a0 There are 188 features that are almost ready for 3D visualization.\u00a0 Just one catch- these counts must translate to a unit of measurement for height.\u00a0 The hex bin with the highest count has 53 points that fall within it.\u00a0 If this were 53 meters tall, that hex bin\u2019s height Click \u201cDONE\u201d and \u201cDONE\u201d again.<\/p>\n<p>You can experiment with turning edges on or labelling in the previous dialog, but this works well for this.<\/p>\n<p>This is a thematic scene, and you must take how you display elevation under consideration.\u00a0 You\u2019ll notice, looking at this scene, that hex bins start their height on the ground.\u00a0 When the ground has hills and mountains (as Redlands does), the significance of height is a little confused by varied elevation.\u00a0 You should remove elevation with the following steps.<\/p>\n<p>8. Click the arrow next to Ground.<\/p>\n<p>9. Click the three dots next to \u201cTerrain3D\u201d and click \u201cRemove\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ground is now flat, and it doesn\u2019t confuse the meaning to the data you\u2019re portraying.<\/p>\n<p>10. On the righthand side, you can change the basemap you\u2019re using. I like Nova Map for this kind of scene.<\/p>\n<p>Now you\u2019ll save a few slides to save the camera viewpoint.<\/p>\n<p>11. Click \u201cSlides\u201d on the bottom left.<\/p>\n<p>12. Navigate to a good point of view and click the \u201c+Capture Slide.\u201d Repeat until you have a few useful slides to show your scene.<\/p>\n<p>13. Click \u201cDONE\u201d<\/p>\n<p>14. Click \u201cSAVE SCENE\u201d<\/p>\n<p>15. Give your scene a Title, Summary and tags<\/p>\n<p>16. Click the Share button<\/p>\n<p>17. You\u2019ll see a warning that this scene is not shared with the public. Click \u201cChange Share Settings\u201d<\/p>\n<p>18. On the right of the Overview for the Scene, click \u201cShare\u201d. Select \u201cEveryone (public)\u201d.\u00a0 It\u2019ll also ask you to update permissions for the \u201cRedlandsHexCount\u201d feature.<\/p>\n<p>19.
