You may have seen demonstrations or tried out data collection in the ArcGIS Field Maps<\/a> mobile app, or perhaps you\u2019ve collected data using maps in ArcGIS Collector. How are these maps and their associated forms created? Let\u2019s make a Parks map and find out. Along the way, you\u2019ll learn how to prepare a layer and make a map so you can try data collection in Field Maps<\/a>. This workflow is supported on ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise 12.0 and later.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

First, think about how the Field Maps mobile app will work after you\u2019ve created your Parks map\u2014you\u2019ll open your map<\/strong> of parks in the app, and that map will contain the layers<\/strong> you created of things to capture in the parks, such as single places (a picnic table), lengths (a sidewalk), and areas (a playground). Each layer<\/strong> defines the information that can be captured in the form<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Create a map and map layers<\/h2>\n

You can use Field Maps Designer to create the map and map layers needed for this project. We\u2019ll only configure a\u00a0Places layer\u00a0and a\u00a0Path\u00a0layer. For extra credit, you can create an\u00a0Areas\u00a0layer by following the same steps.<\/p>\n

  1. Sign in to your ArcGIS account in a browser and open Field Maps Designer from the app launcher. The Maps <\/strong>page will appear, showing all the maps you have created.<\/li>\n

    4. Under Layer name<\/strong>, replace Layer_1 with Places<\/code>. Keep the default\u00a0Point\u00a0<\/strong>layer\u00a0type.<\/p>\n

    5. Click the Add<\/strong>\u00a0button to add a new layer.<\/p>\n

    6. For the new layer, replace Layer_1 with Path<\/code> and change the Layer type<\/strong> to Line<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    If you want to create an\u00a0Areas\u00a0layer, use the Add button to add a new layer, rename it to Areas, and change the Layer type<\/strong> to Polygon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    7. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    8. We will not change any map and layers settings on the Configure settings<\/strong> tab. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    9. The Title and save<\/strong> tab opens. Title your map Parks<\/code> and, optionally, change the Feature layer title<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    10. Click the Folder<\/strong>\u00a0drop-down menu to select what folder to save the map in or to create a new folder.<\/p>\n
