After an event, it can be very useful to see where personnel were during the course of the day. One interesting way to visualize this is by creating an animation over time using data recorded by ArcGIS Tracker<\/a> or ArcGIS Field Maps<\/a>. The two animations below play back the last known locations and historical tracks over time using some data I captured while on a short hike.<\/p>\n

Export the data from ArcGIS Online<\/h2>\n

The first step is to export the historical tracks from ArcGIS Online. Tracks can be exported to a CSV file, downloaded, and then imported into ArcGIS Pro to build the animation. In ArcGIS Online, navigate to either the location tracking feature service or any track view. Add a title and one or more tags, then click Export<\/strong>. Once this completes, there will be an option to download the file. Click Download<\/strong> and save the file to your desktop. You should be able to open the generated CSV file in a program like Microsoft Excel and verify there are rows of data.<\/p>\n

While there are alternative ways to export data using other geoprocessing tools, exporting directly from ArcGIS Online is the fastest and recommended way.<\/em> On ArcGIS Enterprise, tracks must be downloaded using different methods such as <\/em>Extract Data<\/em><\/a> (which have some limitations).<\/em><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"

Process the data<\/h2>\n

Now that we have the location data, let’s open it with ArcGIS Pro. Next, we will \u00a0calculate values for the End Time<\/strong> field. For this, open the Calculate End Time<\/strong> Geoprocessing tool and run it using the parameters outlined below. For each tracked user, it will set the End Time<\/strong> to be the next Start Time<\/strong> value in chronological order. Now that the two date fields have been populated, we need to enable time on our feature layer. Open the Properties<\/strong> for your feature layer and select the Time <\/strong>tab. Set the Layer Time <\/strong>to be “Each feature has start and end time fields”. Set the Start Time Field <\/strong>to “Start Time”. Animating all the tracks<\/h3>\n

If you wanted to create an animation of all the historical tracks over time, you can do that with just a few minor changes.<\/p>\n

  1. For your feature layer, configure the Time<\/strong> to be Each feature has a single time field<\/strong> and set the Time Field <\/strong>to “Start Time”.<\/li>\n
  2. In the Time <\/strong>ribbon, unlock the Span<\/strong> and set the Number of steps <\/strong>to a value that makes sense for your data.<\/li>\n
  3. Then create a new animation using the same steps as above. Make sure that the second keyframe includes the full time-range of data<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
