Making sure you know your \u201cwhy\u201d is particularly important;\u00a0if it\u2019s not compelling enough, or you don\u2019t have the right audience,\u00a0crowdsourcing\u00a0may not\u00a0yield\u00a0many responses\u00a0and may be inappropriate.<\/p>\n<p>Here are\u00a0a few solid reasons for\u00a0adding\u00a0a crowdsourced element\u00a0to\u00a0your story:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You want to engage with a community on a mutually beneficial\u00a0topic<\/li>\n<li>You want to connect\u00a0readers\u00a0to your topic in\u00a0a\u00a0place-based\u00a0manner\u00a0and help\u00a0them see themselves in\u00a0the\u00a0larger\u00a0narrative<\/li>\n<li>You want a real-time\u00a0view\u00a0of\u00a0community\u00a0perspectives\u00a0on\u00a0your topic\u00a0now and in the\u00a0future<\/li>\n<li>You want to create a sense of\u00a0connectivity and appreciation for various\u00a0experiences<\/li>\n<li>You have a practical application,\u00a0like\u00a0understanding where a community may want a new\u00a0park<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While these are tried and true motivations for a successful crowdsourced component, ultimately,\u00a0the\u00a0technique is flexible.\u00a0When done right, crowdsourcing\u00a0can elevate community stories and opinions, even\u00a0creating\u00a0change or\u00a0inspiring\u00a0action.<\/p>\n<p>Of course,\u00a0it\u2019s important\u00a0to recognize when crowdsourcing might\u00a0not\u00a0be appropriate,\u00a0as\u00a0these\u00a0initiatives\u00a0can fail\u00a0to\u00a0get participation, or worse, motivate negative action or change.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few\u00a0reasons\u00a0to\u00a0decide against\u00a0using\u00a0crowdsourcing\u00a0in your story:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You\u00a0want to ask more than a couple of questions; long surveys will discourage participation\u00a0and the responses can be cumbersome to display<\/li>\n<li>You need sensitive\u00a0or personally identifiable\u00a0information<\/li>\n<li>Your questions do not enrich your narrative in a meaningful way, or they distract from the experience<\/li>\n<li>Your audience does not know enough about the subject matter to contribute or it&#8217;s premature to engage them in it<\/li>\n<li>You do not have the bandwidth to maintain it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><em><strong>Examples of crowdsourced data in storytelling\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at some examples of how\u00a0authors\u00a0have incorporated\u00a0crowdsourced\u00a0data directly\u00a0into ArcGIS\u00a0StoryMaps.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>Birdability\u00a0Map Viewer\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/819bf15a20164b4ba5196c04f58836b4\"><em>Birdability\u00a0Map Viewer<\/em><\/a>, a story by the National Audubon Society, uses crowdsourcing to\u00a0glean\u00a0practical information from community members. Audubon uses crowdsourced data to\u00a0communicate\u00a0the accessibility of outdoor locations. Each point represents a trail, park, or birding area,\u00a0and contains information about parking, trail slope, trail conditions and more.\u00a0This\u00a0implementation\u00a0allows anyone who goes outside to submit a \u201cBirdability\u00a0Review\u201d and instantly see their point come to life on the map. It uses a\u00a0two-question survey\u00a0to\u00a0ask how\u00a0people\u00a0feel about the current state of women\u2019s\u00a0representation in government.\u00a0In the story, the map comes alive with\u00a0a range of\u00a0thoughts and opinions\u00a0from around the world.
