We as data scientists love to experiment, prototype, and try different things out, and the data science notebook experience is designed to facilitate this type of on-the-fly interaction.\u00a0 We can use snapshots to ensure that we can always come back to a clean version of our data and code.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Jupyter Notebooks: \u201cAutosave\u201d vs. \u201cCheckpoint\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you are a Jupyter Notebook user, you may be familiar with the terms \u201cAutosave\u201d or \u201cCheckpoint\u201d.\u00a0 When you create a new Jupyter Notebook, it creates an initial .ipynb file and a hidden subdirectory named .ipynb_checkpoints, which also contains the checkpoint.ipynb file in your save location.\u00a0 Think of the initial .ipynb file as the notebook you are working in, and the checkpoint.ipynb file as the one you can revert back to if default, all Jupyter Notebooks autosave every 120 seconds (2 minutes), which means that you can close the notebook without manually saving it, and you won\u2019t lose any work.\u00a0 This autosave functionality saves only the initial .ipynb file, not the checkpoint file.\u00a0 If you want to update the checkpoint.ipynb file, you have to manually save your progress using the Save and Checkpoint button on the If you want to restore \u201cxxxx-checkpoint_1.ipynb\u201d using the Revert to Checkpoint option, you have to rename it back to \u201cxxxx-checkpoint.ipynb\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line, it is possible to preserve multiple versions of your Jupyter Notebooks via checkpoints, but the process involves a lot of manual renaming and reorganization of files.\u00a0 Here is where the new ArcGIS Notebook snapshots might make your life a little easier\u2026<\/p>\n<h3><strong>ArcGIS Notebooks: \u201cSnapshots\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The end-result of using an ArcGIS Notebook snapshot is the same as reverting back to a manually saved Jupyter Notebook checkpoint\u2014you get a point-in-time version of your notebook.\u00a0 The main difference between using the Jupyter Notebook checkpoints and ArcGIS Notebook snapshots is that you can have multiple different snapshots for a single notebook, and you don\u2019t have to go through the manual process of renaming different checkpoint.ipynb files.\u00a0 Each snapshot of a notebook is a full copy of the notebook file JSON, and is preserved as a resource file on the notebook item.<\/p>\n<p>To create and manage snapshots in a notebook, you need to be a Creator or GIS Professional user type in your ArcGIS Online organization, and you need to have either an Administrator role or a custom role in which you\u2019ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/docdev.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/reference\/roles.htm\">granted privileges<\/a> to create and edit Notebooks.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019ve reached a point when you are ready to take a snapshot of your notebook, you click <strong>Snapshots<\/strong> on the top ribbon of the notebook editor.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":{"ID":1186672,"id":1186672,"title":"Snapshots2","filename":"Snapshots2.png","filesize":35775,"url":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Snapshots2.png","link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-online\/analytics\/save-and-restore-your-progress-with-arcgis-notebook-snapshots\/snapshots2","alt":"","author":"154341","description":"","caption":"","name":"snapshots2","status":"inherit","uploaded_to":1186372,"date":"2021-04-07 16:42:14","modified":"2021-04-07 16:42:14","menu_order":0,"mime_type":"image\/png","type":"image","subtype":"png","icon":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/wp-includes\/images\/media\/default.png","width":1057,"height":518,"sizes":{"thumbnail":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Snapshots2-213x200.png","thumbnail-width":213,"thumbnail-height":200,"medium":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Snapshots2.png","medium-width":464,"medium-height":227,"medium_large":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Snapshots2.png","medium_large-width":768,"medium_large-height":376,"large":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Snapshots2.png","large-width":1057,"large-height":518,"1536x1536":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Snapshots2.png","1536x1536-width":1057,"1536x1536-height":518,"2048x2048":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Snapshots2.png","2048x2048-width":1057,"2048x2048-height":518,"card_image":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Snapshots2-826x405.png","card_image-width":826,"card_image-height":405,"wide_image":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Snapshots2.png","wide_image-width":1057,"wide_image-height":518}},"image_position":"center","orientation":"horizontal","hyperlink":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\"><em>Note:<\/em> If you\u2019ve created a new notebook, you will only see <strong>Snapshots<\/strong> on the top ribbon <em>after you\u2019ve saved the notebook<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>You can see that I already have several snapshots associated with this notebook, each pointing to a different phase of my work.\u00a0\u00a0 A single notebook can have up to five snapshots associated with it.<\/p>\n<p>Clicking the Options button (ellipsis) next to a snapshot allows you to restore the notebook to the state at which the snapshot was created, delete the snapshot, or download the snapshot as an .ipynb file for offline use.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s see how we can restore the notebook to different versions, then add some code and create a new snapshot.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"youtube","start_time":"0","end_time":"","youtube_video_url":"<iframe title=\"Snapshots Notebooks video\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j8AyQEtnN1w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
