{"id":120121,"date":"2012-03-14T16:06:17","date_gmt":"2012-03-14T16:06:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/product\/uncategorized\/swat-soil-water-assessment-tool\/"},"modified":"2018-07-19T13:34:09","modified_gmt":"2018-07-19T20:34:09","slug":"swat-soil-water-assessment-tool","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/product\/water\/swat-soil-water-assessment-tool","title":{"rendered":"SWAT: Soil &#038; Water Assessment Tool"},"author":4911,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_searchwp_excluded":""},"categories":[23051],"tags":[24981,30261,32901,37771],"industry":[],"product":[],"class_list":["post-120121","blog","type-blog","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-water","tag-hydro","tag-soil","tag-surface-water","tag-water"],"acf":{"short_description":"What is SWAT?\r\nA sophisticated basin-scale computer model that predicts impacts of weather, soils, land use and land management on water s...","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 10px solid white;\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads.esri.com\/blogs\/hydro\/ArcSWAT\/Fig4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"383\" height=\"180\" \/><\/em><strong>What is SWAT?<\/strong><br \/>\nA sophisticated basin-scale computer model that predicts impacts of weather, soils, land use and land management on water supplies and pollution as well as\u00a0 soil erosion, fertility and crop production.<\/p>\n<p>This model contributes to understanding the complex ecosystem and its service to water availability, water quality; food vulnerability and food production; as well as socioeconomic demography issues worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Soil and Water Assessment Tool<\/strong>, or <strong>SWAT model<\/strong>, is a public domain model developed by a group of scientists from the USDA-Agricultural Research Service; USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Texas A&amp;M University.<\/p>\n<p><strong><!--more-->Facts about SWAT:<\/strong><!--more--><br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 SWAT serves as a virtual laboratory for testing the effectiveness of alternative environmental and agricultural policies and pollution control programs\u00a0 currently used in 90 countries<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 SWAT is not just a research tool any longer, but it is used to provide useful, real-world assessments and problem focused solutions<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Research and its applications of the SWAT model have contributed to long-lasting changes in natural resource assessments and development of management system options<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is utilizing the SWAT model?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe SWAT model has been used extensively:<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In Europe to assess watersheds, climate change and transboundary issues<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In China for the Yellow River and its tributaries, and the Yangtze River<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In Kenya to determine the effects of reforestation policies; and in Ethiopia on Victoria and Tana Lake (partially funded by USAID)<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In Southeast Asia to assess a four-country area in the lower Mekong River Basin<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In Pakistan on the Indus Basin to assess irrigation management (with funding from the U.S. Department of State)<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the model, there are a complete suite of tools to prepare the inputs through GIS spatial datasets (ArcSWAT and MwSWAT), perform sensitivity analysis, auto-calibration and uncertainty analysis (SWAT-CUP), and finally to visualize the results using VizSWAT. These tools are available to download on the <strong><a title=\"SWAT\" href=\"http:\/\/swatmodel.tamu.edu\/\">SWAT website<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 581px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 200px;\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads.esri.com\/blogs\/hydro\/ArcSWAT\/Fig1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"581\" height=\"616\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">SWAT results in Africa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>SWAT Training<\/strong><br \/>\nAs the worldwide use of SWAT grows, at any given time, more than 50 graduate students around the globe are using the SWAT model as a central focus of their graduate research work and more than 20 plus universities have adapted the SWAT model as part of their graduate curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, there are more than 1,000 peer reviewed publications published through more than 85 journals\u00a0 on the SWAT model.<\/p>\n<p>As such, the popularity of <a title=\"SWAT conferences\" href=\"http:\/\/swatmodel.tamu.edu\/conferences\/\">international conferences<\/a> on this model increases each year with an increasingly number of attendees representing more than 30 countries. In addition, Dr. R.
