Thus, I thought it would be a good idea to review the use of rotation angles in ArcMap.<\/p>\n<p>You have probably set rotation angles for symbols, (markers, hash lines, and Line or gradient fills), your <a title=\"ArcGIS Web Help: Data Frame Tools toolbar\" href=\"http:\/\/webhelp.esri.com\/arcgisdesktop\/9.2\/index.cfm?topicname=data_frame_tools_toolbar\" target=\"_blank\">data frame<\/a>, and maybe even for <a title=\"ArcGIS Web Help: Rotating point feature symbology\" href=\"http:\/\/webhelp.esri.com\/arcgisdesktop\/9.2\/index.cfm?id=300&amp;pid=286&amp;topicname=Rotating_point_feature_symbology\" target=\"_blank\">point features which can be rotated<\/a> by the angle stored in a <a title=\"GIS Dictionary entry for Field\" href=\"http:\/\/support.esri.com\/index.cfm?fa=knowledgebase.gisDictionary.search&amp;search=true&amp;searchTerm=field\" target=\"_blank\">field<\/a>. Most of you already know your own data well, but if you&#8217;ve<br \/>\never downloaded data or inherited legacy data, you may not know which way the rotation angles were calculated (so if you publish data, remember to invest a few minutes in authoring the metadata).<\/p>\n<p>ArcGIS has tools and functionality that may use any of three rotation methods:\u00a0 Geographic, Arithmetic, and Graphic.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads.esri.com\/MappingCenter2007\/blog\/Nov07Images\/RotationAngles_Fig1.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Rotation Angles - Figure 2\" hspace=\"5\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads.esri.com\/MappingCenter2007\/blog\/Nov07Images\/RotationAngles_Fig2.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Rotation Angles - Figure 2\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads.esri.com\/MappingCenter2007\/blog\/Nov07Images\/RotationAngles_Fig3.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Rotation Angles - Figure 3\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Usually in ArcMap there is a preview to show you how the rotation angle you have chosen will look, so it isn&#8217;t necessary to know which method is being used to complete most tasks. But, when you need to create data containing rotation angles for displaying symbols, you will need to be aware of which method is appropriate. For instance, rotating point feature symbology supports Geographic and Arithmetic rotation, so either will work. Cartographic representations, however, only support Graphic Rotation, and will assume your data&#8217;s rotation angles use that method.
