At their core, these guidelines can be paraphrased as two golden rules:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Times New Roman\" data-listid=\"9\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The benefits\/knowledge to be gained\u00a0must\u00a0outweigh risks (and adequacy of protection against risks).<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0For example, ensuring respondent privacy and confidentiality can help build trust with your respondents.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Times New Roman\" data-listid=\"9\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Survey respondents should be\u00a0informed of risks and\u00a0must\u00a0voluntarily consent to\u00a0participating.\u00a0For example, ensuring respondent privacy and confidentiality can help build trust with your respondents.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"> Informed consent can also entail what data is being collected, stored, and used.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In other words, survey participation should be voluntary and there should be a stated benefit for the respondents. Other professional organizations have their own ethics guidelines, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicinganthropology.org\/practice\/ethics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Association of the Practice of Anthropology<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aag.org\/cs\/programs\/interdisciplinary\/ethics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Association of Geographers<\/a>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h1>Recruiting respondents<\/h1>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Recruiting voluntary participants can be challenging, but not impossible.\u00a0The first step in ethical surveying is making sure that you are reaching out to the people who can truly\u00a0benefit.\u00a0Some\u00a0issues to\u00a0carefully\u00a0consider are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"10\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Representation:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Are\u00a0your survey\u00a0respondents\u00a0representative?\u00a0Your pool of participants should be representative\u00a0of the larger population you are trying to learn about.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Selection Bias:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Has your pool of respondents been sampled to avoid selection bias?\u00a0For example, if you are posting the survey\u2019s QR code in libraries, you might\u00a0overrepresent\u00a0from those who frequent libraries. You also might get overrepresentation from those who have a phone that can scan a QR code.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Correct Sample:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Are you surveying the wrong people? If you\u2019re recruiting through a clinic or a school, but you\u2019re interested in underserved populations, you might be missing people.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Compensation:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Is compensation appropriate? If this survey is going to take some time to fill out, or if you\u2019re surveying people for whom time is scarce, you might consider compensating respondents for their time. Examples could include being entered into a raffle for a gift card, a digital download of some e-book or other information product, or a discount to a product you offer. (Offer too much and it can be perceived as coercive.)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Trust Building:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0If your survey is sensitive in nature, how will you gain trust? If answering your questions could trigger painful memories, will you provide a number to call such as a domestic violence hotline, or HIV hotline?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h1>Survey design<\/h1>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Another important aspect of ethical surveying is\u00a0ensuring the validity of the survey design.\u00a0Wording and ordering of questions\u00a0is\u00a0important.\u00a0Some examples of how this can go wrong are listed below:\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Specificity:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u201cDo you like fried chicken?\u201d is not the same as \u201cDo you like KFC?\u201d Personally, I love to eat fried chicken from a local BBQ restaurant by my apartment, but I\u00a0actually do\u00a0not like KFC. If you ask me, \u201cDo you like fried chicken\u201d and I respond \u201cyes,\u201d it would be false to conclude that I like KFC. Don\u2019t overestimate the insights that you\u2019re\u00a0actually getting\u00a0from your respondents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Loaded Meanings:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Generational, gender, and cultural differences all factor in to how people interpret and respond to survey questions. For example, Americans are more likely than other populations to rate themselves &#8220;above average&#8221; for things like intelligence, health, driving ability, and so on, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6029792\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">men more likely to do so than women<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Regional Assumptions\/Biases:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Geographical\/regional differences can also play into different interpretations of questions. A question such as &#8220;What do you like to do on snow days?&#8221; won&#8217;t make much sense to people in warmer areas who haven&#8217;t experienced snow days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Question order: <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Psychologists often talk about priming as a phenomenon that can affect behavior, in this case, survey response. Priming is when current actions are influenced by very recent information. For example, if a school is interviewing a group of parents and places a question such as &#8220;What is the most pressing issue facing our school today?&#8221; right before &#8220;How well do you think our school principal is doing?,&#8221; respondents will be primed to think of the principal&#8217;s response to the issue they just chose right before. Early items in your survey could have an effect on later responses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Testing and Translation:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Testing and getting translation right can take some care. Survey123 surveys can be translated into any language, and can even be configured to support <a href=\"https:\/\/community.esri.com\/t5\/arcgis-survey123-blog\/survey123-tricks-of-the-trade-introducing-multilingual-surveys\/bc-p\/894922\/highlight\/true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multilingual surveys<\/a>.\u202f <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/videos\/watch?videoid=_PgYu4zCT9g&amp;title=esri-uc-2017-taylor-shellfish-farms\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">See how this Taylor Shellfish Farms configured a survey<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fin both Spanish and Khmer so that their farmworkers from Latin America and Cambodia were better able to respond to their Farm Debris Monitoring Survey.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h1>Asking sensitive questions<\/h1>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Some factors that can undermine question sensitivity are social desirability bias, or virtue signaling. For example, when asking about gambling habits or activities, it may trigger defensive responses such as \u201cOf course I don\u2019t gamble!\u201d or \u201cMe, smoke? Goodness no!\u201d There are ways to ask these types of questions that improves the overall response rate, and the quality of responses such as:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Be as specific as possible when defining sensitive terms. Does gambling just mean trips to casinos, or does it include lotto ticket purchases and fantasy sports leagues? What about church or school raffles as fundraisers?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Instead of asking, \u201cDo you gamble?\u201d simply assume people do, and ask, \u201cHow many times have you gambled in the past (specific time period)?\u201d Be sure to provide a none\/zero option.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Consider making sensitive questions optional. This might cause this question\u2019s response rate to decrease, but it could help to decrease people leaving your survey altogether.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Configure these survey questions<\/h2>\n<p>Step 1. Add a Single Choice question. Then the configuration options will appear.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2. Type in the direct, timebound question in the Label, and any specific definitions in the Hint. This means that my respondents will be able to advance to the next question without submitting an answer should they choose to do so.<\/p>\n<h1>Order randomization<\/h1>\n<p>Similar to question order affecting responses, choice order can also bias results, as people tend to choose the first choice they agree with. If you have a survey question with choices that are not in a natural order, for instance, a non-ordered list of options about summer activities, consider randomizing the question options. For example, a certain neighborhood might only have one same-sex couple household with a child, only one widow who drives an electric vehicle, or only one 25-year-old female who is divorced. Depending on the survey topics and questions, I might be able to learn all about that person&#8217;s employment and earnings, medical information, and more.<\/p>\n<p>When presenting your survey results, you may have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/health\/health\/suppress-low-counts-and-still-create-informative-web-maps-with-pop-ups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suppress low counts<\/a> so that viewers of your public data and maps only see something like &#8220;3 or fewer&#8221; rather than the specific number.
