This blog covers various methods to use in your pop-ups.","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In Part 1<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of this blog series<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, we learned about the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/mapping\/margins-of-error-and-mapping\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">importan<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ce<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of using Margins of Error (MOEs) within our mapping projects<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Since surveyed data such as the American Community Survey (ACS) will <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">contain some sort of sampling and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nonsampling<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0errors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, especially at smaller geographies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0like block groups and tracts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, it is our job as map creators to communicate\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">margins of error when they are necessary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">U.S.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Census<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Bureau<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0has done us all a huge favor by offering margins of error<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(MOE)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">data\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">estimate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ne method of showcasing MOEs is through the map\u2019s pop-up<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Pop-ups allow<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">map audience\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">dive deeper into\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">map\u2019s topic to see a detailed breakdown of the data.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This blog\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">provide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0various techniques and suggestions for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">how to create effective pop-ups about ACS estimates and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">MOEs. You can use these techniques together or on their own. There\u2019s not one correct way to communicate\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">MOEs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, so it is up to you as the map maker to assess what information is important to convey.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>Build a strong\u00a0<\/b><b>pop-up<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Before we even add an MOE to our pop-up, let\u2019s talk about effective pop-ups<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in general<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">We often<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0see\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">pop-ups with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a list of attributes, leaving the map reader to decipher what is important<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0The easiest way to create an effective pop-up is to turn\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a table of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">data into something digestible by using easy-to-read statements<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with a custom pop-up<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Don\u2019t make your map reader do all the work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0by including every single attribute from a table<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Include the \u201cbase\u201d (AKA the denominator) somewhere in your pop-up. If you\u2019re mapping the percent of population age 25+ without insurance, include the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">total\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">count of population 25+<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0somewhere in your pop-up.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Not every attribute will necessarily need the MOE included. Think about how your audience plans to use the map and if the MOE is important to them.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Once you know the key information you want to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">communicate to your map audience<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">et\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">look<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">some simple ways to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">create impactful ACS pop-ups<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0with our estimates and MOEs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Use your\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">words<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">One way to communicate that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ACS<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0data\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">contains\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">sampling\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">erro<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">without causing alarm\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">us<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">words li<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ke \u201capproximately\u201d or \u201cestimated\u201d when talking about the estimate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0itself<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Notice how the pop-up<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> below\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">uses these words to help communicate that the number is not exact, without drawing attention to the error itself.\u00a0<\/span><span
