The <strong>HydroSHEDS<\/strong> dataset was derived from SRTM elevation data, while the <strong>HYDRO1K<\/strong> and <strong>GRDC<\/strong> datasets were derived from the GTOPO30 elevation dataset. Here\u2019s some additional information on each dataset:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>HydroSHEDS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"WWF - Conservation Science\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conservation Science Program<\/a> of <a title=\"World Wildlife Fund\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/home-full.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Wildlife Fund (WWF)<\/a> took high-resolution elevation data collected during NASA\u2019s Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and developed <a title=\"WWF - Freshwater Science - HydroSHEDS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/science\/projects\/freshwater\/item1991.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>HydroSHEDS<\/strong><\/a> (Hydrological data and maps based on SHuttle Elevation Derivatives at multiple Scales).\u00a0 <strong>HydroSHEDS<\/strong> is a set of hydro information mapping products at regional and global scales. The suite of data includes river networks, watershed boundaries, drainage directions, and flow accumulations.\u00a0 <strong>HydroSHEDS<\/strong> makes it possible to produce quality watershed analyses, hydrologic modeling, and water conservation and planning at regional and global levels for parts of the world that are largely unmapped.\u00a0 The data products were derived from hydrologically conditioned SRTM data, and the resolution ranges from 90 meters to 10 km, with a seamless near-global extent (<em>www.worldwildlife.org<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads.esri.com\/blogs\/hydro\/GlobalHydro\/HydroSHEDS.jpg\" alt=\"Amazon Basin HydroSHEDS\" width=\"581\" height=\"585\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Amazon Basin HydroSHEDS map.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>HYDRO1K<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>HYDRO1K<\/strong> database was developed by <a title=\"USGS\/EROS\" href=\"http:\/\/eros.usgs.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USGS\u2019s Earth Resources Observations and Science (EROS) Data Center<\/a> from the <a title=\"USGS\/EROS - GTOPO30\" href=\"http:\/\/eros.usgs.gov\/#\/Find_Data\/Products_and_Data_Available\/gtopo30_info\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global 30 Arc-Second Elevation Data Set (GTOPO30)<\/a>. <strong>HYDRO1K<\/strong> data covers every continent, and includes a hydrologically corrected DEM, streams and drainage basins, and other ancillary data sets like flow direction.<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads.esri.com\/blogs\/hydro\/GlobalHydro\/HYDRO1K_2.jpg\" alt=\"HYDRO1K for South America\" width=\"586\" height=\"731\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>HYDRO1K data products for South America.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>GRDC: Major River Basins of the World<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"GRDC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bafg.de\/cln_031\/nn_266934\/GRDC\/EN\/Home\/homepage__node.html?__nnn=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Global Runoff Data Centre (GRDC)<\/strong><\/a>, part of the <a title=\"WMO\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wmo.int\/pages\/index_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Meteorological Organization (WMO)<\/a>, operates to support integrated water resources management on the global scale through the exchange of hydrologic data and information.\u00a0 They used the flow direction grid from <strong>HYDRO1K<\/strong> to generate their own data product: <a title=\"GRDC Major River Basins of the World\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bafg.de\/GRDC\/EN\/02_srvcs\/22_gslrs\/221_MRB\/riverbasins_node.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Major River Basins of the World<\/strong><\/a>. This dataset contains river basins and associated rivers with slightly different geometries than the <strong>HYDRO1K<\/strong> data, AND each river in the dataset contains <strong>mean annual discharge<\/strong> values calculated with the WaterGAP 2.1 methodology. Additionally, all basins and rivers are attributed with <strong>names <\/strong>(<em>Global Runoff Data Centre (2007): Major River Basins of the World \/ Global Runoff Data Centre. Koblenz, Germany: Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG)<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads.esri.com\/blogs\/hydro\/GlobalHydro\/MRBW.jpg\" alt=\"GRDC: Major River Basins of the World: Major rivers classified by thier mean annual runoff.\" width=\"818\" height=\"419\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Major river basins of the World: Major rivers classified by their mean annual runoff. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Global Hydro datasets<\/strong> are invaluable to the people of planet earth because they make it possible to map, track, and model our water resources\u2014abilities necessary to plan for and sustain life as we know it.\u00a0 But, these datasets need to be moved a step further than where they are now. They need to reach a broader audience than just scientists and academics. To do this we need to take these global mapping products and actually make useful maps and applications with them that will help people all over the world understand water.
