Land Capability Maps on arcgis.com"},"author":4911,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_searchwp_excluded":""},"categories":[22941,23051],"tags":[28261,38951,24981,24171,27041,38811,28431,27411,33501,30261,38961,28441,28451,33981,38971,29691,38981,38991,39001,39011],"industry":[],"product":[36551],"class_list":["post-122121","blog","type-blog","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-mapping","category-water","tag-agriculture","tag-class","tag-hydro","tag-land","tag-map","tag-muaggatt","tag-nrcs","tag-planning","tag-real-estate","tag-soil","tag-soil-survey","tag-soils","tag-ssurgo","tag-united-states","tag-us-soils-map","tag-usda","tag-valuation","tag-value","tag-webmap","tag-webmaps","product-arcgis-online"],"acf":{"short_description":"Let's say you're a farmer or farm real estate broker, and you are evaluating whether or not to buy a piece of land.&nbsp; Your business a...","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>Let&#8217;s say you&#8217;re a farmer or farm real estate broker, and you are evaluating whether or not to buy a piece of land.&nbsp; Your business and your livelihood depends completely on the land and its capability to produce income.<\/p>\n<p>How do you tell the difference between a bad piece of land and a piece of land that has good potential but hasn&#8217;t been managed well or has otherwise been neglected?&nbsp; What can the piece of land do, and what is it really worth?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads.esri.com\/blogs\/hydro\/LandCapabilitySoils\/FarmMeeting.jpg\" height=\"332\" width=\"500\"><\/p>\n<p><i>In a time of great uncertainty and volatility in financial markets and real estate valuation, the inherent capability of a piece of land&#8217;s soil asset has just become a lot easier to estimate.&nbsp; Image credit: USDA<\/i><\/p>\n<p>To help answer these questions, esri has produced two new maps and map layers on arcgis.com.&nbsp; Both are planning-level maps of the economic capability of the United States&#8217; soils.&nbsp; One map shows the economic capability when the soil is irrigated and the other when the soil is not irrigated.&nbsp; These maps are entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=b7de5fe0081248389536d9aab440c62e\" title=\"arcgis.com map: Irrigated Land Capability Class\" target=\"_blank\">Irrigated Land Capability Class<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=c6cd54d4447543e5a0b22afc0faf5411\" title=\"arcgis.com map: Non-Irrigated Capability Class\" target=\"_blank\">Non-Irrigated Land Capability Class<\/a>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Both maps are made directly from the SSURGO planning level soil dataset from NRCS. For the more technical among us, we used the MUAGGATT table fields ICCDCD and NICCDCD from <a href=\"http:\/\/soils.usda.gov\/survey\/geography\/ssurgo\/\" title=\"NRCS SSURGO\" target=\"_blank\">SSURGO<\/a>.&nbsp; Both maps cover the entire USA including Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n<p>At 1:24,000 scale, each part of the United States falls into one of <a href=\"http:\/\/soils.usda.gov\/technical\/handbook\/contents\/part622.html\" title=\"NRCS Technical Documentation on Land Capability Class\" target=\"_blank\">eight broad land capability classes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The first four classes (1-4) are useful for growing crops, where each class from one to four needs more management or treatment, and has more limitations than the previous class. For example, classes 3 and 4 require more management or treatment than classes 1 and 2.<\/p>\n<p>The last four land capability classes (5-8) are not useful for crops.&nbsp; NRCS recommends these lands be used for things other than crops, like rangeland, forestland, or wildlife habitat. Class eight isn&#8217;t even good for forestry, pasture or rangeland, and so instead NRCS recommends those lands be used for recreation, wildlife habitat, watershed, or aesthetic purposes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=c6cd54d4447543e5a0b22afc0faf5411\" title=\"arcgis.com map: Non-Irrigated Capability Class\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads.esri.com\/blogs\/hydro\/LandCapabilitySoils\/NonIrrigatedCapabilityClass2.jpg\" alt=\"Non-Irrigated Capability Class\" height=\"518\" width=\"800\"><\/a><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>These maps feature a color scheme (shown here in 50% transparency) that matches an image of a sample landscape that you see when you click on each soil map unit.&nbsp; This graphic may then be used like a second legend, displaying the eight classes for you on a replica landscape.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Land Capability Class is one of the most important concepts in the US soil dataset SSURGO.&nbsp; Land Capability Class is even used in some states for property tax assessment. In the State of Ohio, for example, <a href=\"http:\/\/tax.ohio.gov\/divisions\/legal\/rules\/final\/5703_25\/5703_25_34.stm\" title=\"5703-25-34 Use of prescribed agricultural use value of land tables by county auditor\" target=\"_blank\">the tax code prescribes specifically<\/a> how to use this map to determine property tax.<\/p>\n<p>Esri plans to release more land capability maps, specifically Land Capability Subclass.
