{"id":122271,"date":"2012-04-24T10:48:38","date_gmt":"2012-04-24T10:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/product\/uncategorized\/purdues-river-channel-tools-for-arcgis\/"},"modified":"2012-04-24T10:48:38","modified_gmt":"2012-04-24T10:48:38","slug":"purdues-river-channel-tools-for-arcgis","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/product\/water\/purdues-river-channel-tools-for-arcgis","title":{"rendered":"Purdue\u2019s River Channel Tools for ArcGIS"},"author":4911,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_searchwp_excluded":""},"categories":[23051],"tags":[24981,37901,31821,32891,37771,23411],"industry":[],"product":[],"class_list":["post-122271","blog","type-blog","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-water","tag-hydro","tag-model","tag-river","tag-stream","tag-water","tag-water-resources"],"acf":{"short_description":"The anisotropic nature of meandering river morphology poses unique challenges in analyzing and modeling river channel data using GIS.\u00a0 S...","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>The anisotropic nature of meandering river morphology poses unique challenges in analyzing and modeling river channel data using GIS.\u00a0 Standard GIS tools that use Cartesian (x,y) coordinates are not appropriate for dealing with river channels because of their inability to handle river anisotropy \u2013 the unequal physical properties along different axes.\u00a0 However, researchers at Purdue University have created custom tools to handle river channel related data in ArcGIS.\u00a0 Those tools compute river attributes, perform spatial analysis and communicate with external hydraulic models.\u00a0\u00a0 A few examples of the capabilities of Purdue\u2019s river channel tools are given below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpolating Cross-sections to Create a 3D Mesh<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The figure below shows how cross-section (black) lines are interpolated to create a 3D (blue) mesh, and then this mesh is converted to a surface through interpolation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin-right: 30px\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads.esri.com\/blogs\/hydro\/RiverTools\/Fig_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"863\" height=\"316\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><!--more-->Coordinate Transformation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The figure below shows how river channel bathymetry points are converted from Cartesian coordinates to orthogonal coordinates by using the channel centerline as the reference.
