I only had to create one script tool for the model, relying heavily on standard ArcGIS tools in the model to keep code (and future maintenance!) to a minimum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fig2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fig2.png\" alt=\"Create hexagons model\" width=\"850\" height=\"460\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The model tool is fairly simple.\u00a0 The model uses a script tool to create a mesh of points.\u00a0 The points are spaced such that if you run the Create Thiessen Polygons tool included with ArcGIS, regular hexagons (those of equal side length with internal angles of 120 degrees) are generated.\u00a0 The model runs these tools and then intersects the result with the study area to produce the final hexagon mesh.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fig3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27423\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fig3.png\" alt=\"Study area split up into hexagons\" width=\"953\" height=\"408\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t like the result, you can choose a different hexagon size and run the tool again, or you can use ArcMap\u2019s editor to fine tune the hexagon locations.\u00a0 You can also dig into the relatively small bit of script code or change tools within the model to get the result you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve shared this tool as a <a title=\"Create Hexagon Tessellation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=03388990d3274160afe240ac54763e57\">geoprocessing package in ArcGIS Online<\/a>.\u00a0 I welcome feedback and in fact, I would love to hear ideas on how to tackle some challenges I encountered while developing the tool.\u00a0 You can read more about those challenges on the tool\u2019s ArcGIS Online page.\u00a0 Happy hexagon-ing!<\/p>\n"}],"authors":[{"ID":4911,"user_firstname":"Caitlin","user_lastname":"Scopel","nickname":"Caitlin Scopel","user_nicename":"coscopel","display_name":"Caitlin Scopel","user_email":"CScopel@esri.com","user_url":"","user_registered":"2018-03-02 00:16:31","user_description":"Senior Project Manager for the ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World Environment Team.
