I\u00a0<\/span>recently got involved with a project<\/span> that mapped grocery store accessibility<\/a><\/span> by scoring every census block in the United States by the number of grocery stores within a 10-minute walk and a 10-minute drive.\u00a0 <\/span>As the cartographer the challenge was to get all the layers to work, make sense, look good, and tell the results of the analysis as clearly and beautifully as possible.\u00a0 There were four distinct areas of the map to think through.<\/p>\n

The Cast<\/h3>\n

Capturing what grocery access means didn’t take just one layer, it took four.<\/p>\n

T<\/span>here were two raster datasets:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. USA nationwide grocery store access within a 10-minute drive<\/li>\n
  2. USA nationwide grocery store access within a 10-minute walk<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Also two point feature classes:<\/p>\n

    1. 53,000 grocery store locations<\/li>\n
    2. 11-million U.S. Census Tracts analyzed for population and proximity to grocery stores by walking or driving<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      #1 Multi Scale Mapping<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

      This is an interactive online web map so its very different than designing for print.\u00a0 Everything needs be understandable at multiple map scales from nationwide to city blocks.\u00a0 There will also be labels, other reference layers, and new features with additional information appearing as you zoom in and out.<\/p>\n

      Plus the map’s subject changes depending on where you are looking so the styling needs to accommodate that.\u00a0 Some areas might have a lot of overlapping or adjacent data, while in others it appears more isolated.\u00a0 The cartography has to work for every situation.\u00a0 Multiscale is multi-planning, multi-decision, and multi-testing!<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"youtube","start_time":"0","end_time":"","youtube_video_url":"
