Husband, yawning and shuffling aimlessly around the room: \u201cHey, honey!\u00a0 Have you seen my slippers?\u201d<\/p>\n

Wife: \u201cNah.\u00a0 Have you tried Alt+Q?\u201d<\/p>\n

Husband thinks to himself, \u201cI have no clue what you mean.\u201d\u00a0 Shrugs shoulders and keeps looking.<\/p>\n

Later that day\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Husband, rummaging through the refrigerator: \u201cSweetheart!\u00a0 Did you move the mustard?\u00a0 I like to keep it on the middle shelf of the right door, but when I grabbed there without looking, I stuck my hand in some yogurt!\u201d<\/p>\n

Wife: \u201cDid you Alt+Q it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Wife: \u201cI\u2019d seriously try Alt+Q if I were you\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Husband: \u201cAlright, that\u2019s like the fifteenth time you\u2019ve said that today and I have no clue what you\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wife: \u201cOh, right, sorry.\u00a0 It\u2019s just that I\u2019ve been using the new Command Search functionality in ArcGIS Pro 2.8 and I\u2019m obsessed with Alt+Q.\u00a0 It\u2019s been a total game changer for me.\u00a0 Guess I wasn\u2019t listening to you earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n

SHNAP!\u00a0 I certainly know what it feels like to not be listened to, but I wouldn\u2019t blame anybody if it is because they have ArcGIS Pro 2.8\u2019s Command Search<\/a> on their mind.<\/p>\n

The details<\/h2>\n

The Command Search<\/strong> box is located at the top of the application. When the\u00a0offline help is installed<\/a>, you also see a list of help topics that are related to the search term at the bottom of the search results list.\u00a0Command Search<\/strong>\u00a0uses indexes installed with the offline help to find help topics that are related to your search term. Clicking a result opens the selected topic in the offline or online help based on the\u00a0Help source settings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For example, if you click the\u00a0Split<\/strong>\u00a0result and\u00a0ArcGIS Pro\u00a0is configured to use the online help, the topic opens in a web browser.<\/p>\n

Putting it all together<\/h2>\n

Since I started working with ArcGIS Pro 2.8, I\u2019ve found that using Alt+Q minimizes mouse travel, tab switching, and the number of clicks to complete a task; i.e. if we\u2019re thinking about the scenario presented above, instead of moving up to the ribbon, switching to the Edit tab, looking for the Split tool in the Editor tool gallery, and clicking it to open the pane, my new workflow is Alt+Q > split.\u00a0 This is far more efficient for me!<\/p>\n

And if all of this seems a bit overwhelming, simply remember to try Alt+Q when you\u2019re just trying to find something.\u00a0 Hopefully it will help.<\/p>\n

To pull all of this together, there are a number of different strategies to streamline your work in ArcGIS Pro.\u00a0 The newest is Command Search<\/strong> and I hope that by reading this blog you\u2019ll start using Alt+Q to increase your productivity.\u00a0 Look for further Command Search<\/strong> improvements like searching for property pages and settings in future releases.<\/p>\n
