When a new map\u00a0or layer\u00a0is created to replace an\u00a0outdated\u00a0one, what\u00a0are the best practices\u00a0for\u00a0properly\u00a0retiring the\u00a0map\u00a0or layer?<\/p>\n

Scenario:<\/strong> \u00a0I have a web map showing land use which references a map service published using ArcGIS Server years ago. I plan to update the data, using ArcGIS Pro by publishing a hosted feature service to gain more functionality, speed and stability. I will no longer update the ArcGIS Server map service and it will get out-of-date, stale, and old. What do I do with this outdated map and layer in case other people in my community are using it?<\/p>\n

Goal:<\/strong> Help the users of their map realize the old layer is going away and there is a new and better layer available.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0can\u00a0accomplish this transition using the following five steps:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Put \u201cMature Support\u201d in the title. Mature Support means the item will remain available for \u201cthe following time frame\u201d and then after the time frame expires, the layer will be unshared and turned off, unable to be accessed any longer.     2.     3. Mark as Deprecated on the Settings tab.     4. Add a statement in the pop-up indicating the deprecated status and linking users to the newer layer. By adding this statement to the pop-up, users who have included your layer in their webmap will see that there is a newer layer available when they interact with their webmap.     5. Use the same statement from your pop-up in the first sentence of your item description and terms of use.
