Effects give map authors a new level of control over the look of our web maps, especially when combined with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-online\/mapping\/blend-modes-are-here-and-theyre-pretty-awesome\/\"><strong>Blend Modes<\/strong><\/a>. I encourage anyone to experiment with different combinations of Effects to see what looks good, such as adding dropshadows, color tints, outer glows or blurs to your maps.<\/p>\n<p>Print cartography has a long tradition of map layouts that are focused on one location, like a single country or province. Cartographers will often fade or mute details beyond the borders to de-emphasize them. When the story you\u2019re telling isn\u2019t about the entire world this spotlight on one region or area makes the map easier to understand and reduces visual clutter; it establishes \u201cthe subject matter\u201d through geographic framing. The India label is a <strong>Sketch layer<\/strong> with a <em>Overla<\/em>y <strong>Blend mode<\/strong> and a <strong>Dropshadow<\/strong> applied to the text.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1: Prepare the Basemap<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Log into ArcGIS Online and launch <strong>Map Viewer<\/strong>. Switch to the <strong>Imagery basemap<\/strong>. [If your Org doesn\u2019t list it in the basemap gallery, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=10df2279f9684e4a9f6a7f08febac2a9\">find it here.<\/a>] We want to convert this colorful basemap into a muted grayscale version of itself. To do this, click into the Imagery basemap, select <em>World Imagery<\/em> layer and using the <strong>Effects panel <\/strong>and convert it to <strong>Grayscale<\/strong>. This layer will be the portion of the map (India) that remains bright and colorful. Search in the Living Atlas for <em>World Imagery<\/em> and added it as a map layer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3: Add country outlines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to \u201ccookie-cut out\u201d India we need to add a map layer that has the polygon shape of India. More importantly, we don\u2019t need a layer of <em>just<\/em> India&#8211;that could be hard to find&#8211;so instead search the Living Atlas and add the layer \u201cWorld Countries\u201d by Esri. We will filter this down to show only India in a minute. Why? We won\u2019t actually see these country polygons in the final map, they\u2019re just here to works as a filter for other layers! <\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4: Make a Group Layer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-online\/mapping\/try-out-layer-groups-with-map-viewer-beta\/\">Group Layers<\/a> are relatively new feature which allow us to bundle layers together and work with them as a group. Because these countries have names, we can filter on this field. By doing this we are saying \u201conly show the pixels in the Imagery layer that are underneath this polygon shape of India\u201d.
