In ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9.1 the ArcMap Runtime Support feature is now optional in Windows and Linux environments.\u00a0 This means ArcMap Runtime Support can be enabled or disabled, depending on your organization\u2019s needs.\u00a0 This blog will cover what this means exactly, why you might want to disable ArcMap Runtime Support in ArcGIS Enterprise, and how to disable this feature.<\/p>\n

Remind me \u2013 what is a service runtime?<\/h2>\n

ArcGIS Enterprise\u2019s ArcGIS Server component currently includes two internal runtimes: an ArcMap-based runtime for services published from ArcMap and an ArcGIS Pro-based runtime for services published from ArcGIS Pro.\u00a0 There are many differences between the two runtimes, including the version of Python that is installed.\u00a0 The ArcMap-based runtime includes an installation of Python 2.x and the ArcGIS Pro-based runtime includes an installation of Python 3.x.<\/p>\n

These two runtimes have been present since ArcGIS Server 10.4, when the ability to publish from ArcGIS Pro was introduced.\u00a0 These two runtimes have been running \u201cunder the hood\u201d and you may not have even known they were both there.\u00a0 And that\u2019s okay!\u00a0 That\u2019s why we\u2019re explaining what they are now.<\/p>\n

Disabling the ArcMap Runtime Support feature means that the ArcMap-based service will be removed from the ArcGIS Server component ArcGIS Enterprise.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"sidebar","content":"

Why should I disable ArcMap Runtime Support?<\/h2>\n

Now that we\u2019re all on the same page on what the ArcMap Runtime Support feature is, let\u2019s get into why \u2013 or why not<\/em> \u2013\u00a0 this runtime should be disabled.\u00a0 There are two main scenarios in which you might want to disable ArcMap Runtime Support.<\/p>\n

Scenario one: need to remove Python 2.x from your system<\/h3>\n

The Python Software Foundation ended support for the Python 2.x programming language in January 2020 in order to focus their efforts on Python 3.x.\u00a0 Because Python 2.x is a major part of the ArcMap-based runtime, disabling this feature will ensure that\u00a0Python\u00a02.x is not installed with\u00a0ArcGIS Server.\u00a0 \u00a0If your organization has concerns about having\u00a0Python\u00a02.x on your system, consider this option.<\/p>\n

Scenario two: you are ready to migrate fully to the ArcGIS Pro-based runtime<\/h3>\n

As mentioned earlier, ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9.1 will be the last release to contain the ArcMap-based runtime.\u00a0 You can take advantage of this by migrating your ArcMap-based services to use ArcGIS Pro-based runtime.\u00a0 Once your services are all migrated to the ArcGIS Pro-based runtime, consider disabling ArcMap Runtime Support on ArcGIS Server to ensure the runtime migration was successful.\u00a0 Remember, the next release of ArcGIS Enterprise will only contain the ArcGIS Pro-based runtime.\u00a0 Use this as an opportunity to migrate and test your services,\u00a0Python\u00a0scripts, geoprocessing tools, and any ArcObjects SOEs and SOIs.<\/p>\n

Considerations before disabling<\/h3>\n

Regardless of why you decide to disable ArcMap Runtime Support, be sure to migrate all of your services to the ArcGIS Pro-based runtime.\u00a0 ArcMap-based services will no longer be able to run if present during after disabling ArcMap Runtime Support.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"sidebar","content":"

How do I migrate my services?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can migrate your services by using the tooling introduced in ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9. How to disable the ArcMap Runtime Support feature<\/h2>\n

When installing or upgrading ArcGIS Server, you\u2019ll be presented an option to disable the ArcMap Runtime Support feature. \u00a0It will be enabled by default.\u00a0 After ArcGIS Server 10.9.1 is up and running, you can disable or re-enable ArcMap Runtime Support to fully support testing in your environment.<\/p>\n

In Windows<\/h3>\n

In Windows, you can disable or enable ArcMap Runtime Support and remove Python 2.x using the Program Maintenance dialog box or through command line.<\/p>\n
