include\u00a0military bases,\u00a0passenger\u00a0rail,\u00a0or freight rail\u00a0for now.\u00a0But\u00a0in the\u00a0future,\u00a0noise layers\u00a0will\u00a0include some\u00a0or\u00a0all\u00a0of\u00a0these things.\u00a0The current layer\u00a0is\u00a0still\u00a0a significant step toward\u00a0more rational planning decisions\u00a0using the Living Atlas,\u00a0as\u00a0many decisions\u00a0are well\u00a0supported from models of\u00a0ordinary road transportation and civilian\u00a0aircraft\u00a0noise.<\/span><span of\u00a0the Conterminous\u00a0USA\u00a0and measured the sound level\u00a0with a sensor.\u00a0This layer is\u00a0a model\u00a0built\u00a0upon\u00a0understanding\u00a0about how noise is produced\u00a0by transportation and is carried\u00a0across the landscape.\u00a0For this\u00a0layer\u00a0the sound model\u00a0measures\u00a0the\u00a024-hr equivalent sound level\u00a0in\u00a0dBA\u00a0LAeq.\u00a0What does this value mean?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>dB<\/strong> \u2013 Decibels measure the frequency and amplitude of sound energy waves.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>dBA<\/strong> \u2013 Adjusted decibel measurements that also consider different sound frequencies and the varying sensitivity of the human ear.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>LAeq<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Equivalent continuous sound that\u00a0contains\u00a0the same sound energy as a sound that varies over time.<\/span><span Since\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/SP.URB.TOTL.IN.ZS?locations=US\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">82% of the\u00a0USA\u00a0lives in urban areas<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0we wanted to\u00a0figure out what\u00a0cities\u00a0are the noisiest and\u00a0what are the\u00a0quietest? This gave it a combined rank of 8. The brightest part of Elizabeth is the Port Newark\u2013Elizabeth Marine Terminal.
