If you have been using StoryMaps since the days of the classic templates you may recall the amazing gallery of classic stories that was available to help you find great storytelling examples. A few weeks ago, we launched a brand new gallery filled with stories created using ArcGIS StoryMaps.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-storymaps\/gallery\/\">new gallery<\/a> is curated by my stellar colleagues on the StoryMaps editorial team and contains dozens of fantastic stories you can peruse to get inspiration and ideas. Over the last few months, we&#8217;ve released several pieces of work from this project that didn&#8217;t rely directly on the new editor including the ability to drag and drop text blocks, improvements to the appearance and behavior of text wrapping around floating media, and support for map actions in large paragraphs.<\/p>\n<p>In this month&#8217;s update, we&#8217;ve switched over to the new editor and made everything else we&#8217;ve been working on available. You may not immediately notice any significant visual changes&#8230;and that&#8217;s a good thing! We didn&#8217;t want this transition to be disruptive. But as you use the story builder you&#8217;ll begin to discover new features and improvements that will make the experience of writing stories much better. Some of the most requested capabilities that are now available with the new editor are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Multi-level lists<\/li>\n<li>Superscript and subscript<\/li>\n<li>Single-spaced text<\/li>\n<li>Improved hyperlink configuration<\/li>\n<li>Formatting shortcuts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can see a few of these features in action in the video below that my colleagues Will and Du put together, and the gray box at the end of this section outlines all the new text editing tips and tricks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"youtube","start_time":"0","end_time":"","youtube_video_url":"<iframe title=\"New text editor features and capabilities in ArcGIS StoryMaps (CC)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yPein5ZIYTY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll also notice a much better experience when pasting text in the story builder. The format and structure of original text are better preserved when pasting selections from elsewhere within a story, other web pages, and other web-based editing apps. Incoming text can be formatted in many ways, especially by desktop-based apps, so please let us know on the <a href=\"https:\/\/community.esri.com\/t5\/arcgis-storymaps-questions\/bd-p\/arcgis-storymaps-questions\">Esri Community<\/a>\u00a0if you run into issues pasting text.<\/p>\n<p>The new editor also brings a lot of smaller enhancements and updates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Better keyboard navigation (e.g., move between blocks using the arrow keys)<\/li>\n<li>Link detection on paste<\/li>\n<li>Support for link-style map actions within lists<\/li>\n<li>Accessibility improvements<\/li>\n<li>Many, many, many fixes and stability updates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One more thing worth mentioning about this project is that we&#8217;ve made significant under-the-hood changes to integrate a new editor framework that can be extended. This opens the door for adding more requested features such as formatted code blocks, strikethrough, alignment, and more. So stay tuned for more text-related features coming in 2022!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"sidebar","content":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Text editing tips<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Multi-level lists<\/strong>: Place the cursor at the beginning of a list item and use <kbd>TAB<\/kbd> to indent and <kbd>SHIFT+TAB<\/kbd> or <kbd>DELETE\/BACKSPACE<\/kbd> to outdent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Superscript\/subscript<\/strong>: Select text to be formatted and go to the &#8230; menu on the toolbar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Single-spaced text<\/strong>: Use <kbd>SHIFT+ENTER<\/kbd> to create lines of single-spaced text. This can be useful for displaying content that requires a compact arrangement, such a multi-line address or an excerpt from a poem.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: Adjacent lines of single-spaced text are part of the same text block, so inserting blank lines between paragraphs of text using <kbd>SHIFT+ENTER<\/kbd> is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> recommended in most cases.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hyperlinks<\/strong>: Click anywhere inside an existing hyperlink and use the floating toolbar to <em>edit<\/em>, <em>preview<\/em> (open in a new tab), or <em>remove<\/em> the link. Press the left\/right arrow keys at the beginning\/end of a link to move in\/out of the hyperlink. A box appears around the hyperlink when the cursor is inside the link.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Formatting shortcuts<\/strong>: After selecting some text, you can use <kbd>CMD\/CTRL+B<\/kbd> for <strong>bold<\/strong>, <kbd>CMD\/CTRL+I<\/kbd> for <em>italic<\/em>, and <kbd>CMD\/CTRL+K<\/kbd> to create a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/arcgis-storymaps\/overview\">hyperlink<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Block shortcuts<\/strong>: At the beginning of a text block, type one of the shortcuts below followed by a space to automatically convert the block to a different type.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Headings: <kbd>#<\/kbd><\/li>\n<li>Subheading: <kbd>##<\/kbd><\/li>\n<li>Quote: <kbd>&gt;<\/kbd><\/li>\n<li>Large paragraph: <kbd>%<\/kbd><\/li>\n<li>List: <kbd>1.<\/kbd>, <kbd>*<\/kbd>, or <kbd>-<\/kbd><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","image_reference":false,"layout":"standard","image_reference_figure":"","snippet":"","spotlight_name":"","section_title":"","position":"Center","spotlight_image":false},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"express-map-swipe\">Create a swipe block with express maps<\/h1>\n<p>In addition to being able to compare two web maps or two images in a swipe comparison, you can now create a swipe using two express maps. This can be helpful for sketching simple &#8220;before-and-after&#8221; maps or creating a quick comparison between two basemaps. When using express maps, there&#8217;s no need to create and manage two web maps in your content just to create a quick swipe for your story.<\/p>\n<p>Check out the video below to see this feature in action in a sidecar media panel.
