One place where you can download DEMS of the ocean is NOAA&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/maps\/bathymetry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bathymetric data viewer.<\/a> (Read the Learn ArcGIS lesson <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.arcgis.com\/en\/projects\/find-ocean-bathymetry-data\/#download-bathymetric-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Find ocean bathymetry data<\/a> for steps to download this data.)<\/p>\n<p>I downloaded the following DEM: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/metadata\/geoportal\/rest\/metadata\/item\/gov.noaa.ngdc.mgg.dem:11503\/html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eastern Canada 3 arc-second Bathymetric Digital Elevation Model<\/a>. Take note of the <strong>Coordinate System<\/strong>. Mine said <strong>Unknown<\/strong>. If this happens to you, search for your data&#8217;s metadata to find the coordinate system. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/metadata\/geoportal\/rest\/metadata\/item\/gov.noaa.ngdc.mgg.dem:11503\/html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The metadata for my layer<\/a> said that the Spatial Reference System was urn:ogc:def:crs:EPSG::4326urn:ogc:def:datum:EPSG::5831.<\/p>\n<p>That long string looks intimidating, but the two EPSG numbers are all you need. Also take note of the <strong>NoData<\/strong> value. My data has all land areas classified as -9999. This will cause a problem later when I try to make a hillshade. The algorithm will think that land areas are actually extremely deep ocean
