There is an exciting and new 2020 <\/span>European Space Agency layer<\/span><\/a> in ArcGIS Living Atlas<\/a> that classifies the earth into 10 land cover types at a scale of 10-meters.\u202f The resolution is incredible, and we\u2019ve written this <\/span>blog,<\/span><\/a> if you are interested in finding out more. Today, I am writing about one of the 10 classes included in that layer: Mangrove Ecosystems.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Special Ecosystems<\/h2>\n

Mangrove ecosystems are unique<\/span>. <\/span>They are <\/span>composed<\/span> of salt tolerant trees and shrubs with complex root systems<\/span> and are found<\/span> in tropical and subtropical latitudes from <\/span>25\u00b0 North to 25\u00b0 South<\/span>. Incredibly, each year mangroves and coastal wetlands <\/span><\/span>sequester carbon<\/span><\/span><\/a> at a rate <\/span>ten times greater than older well established tropical forests. <\/span>They<\/span> also <\/span>provide<\/span> benefits <\/span>like <\/span>protecting water quality<\/span> by filtering out pollutants before <\/span>they reach<\/span> seagrass habitats and coral reefs<\/span>. <\/span>They<\/span> act<\/span> as a natural buffer by stabilizing the <\/span>coastline <\/span>and prevent<\/span> erosion <\/span>during storm surges and heavy rains<\/span>. <\/span>Mangroves <\/span>provid<\/span>e<\/span> a safe nursery habitat fo<\/span>r fish, shelter terrestrial wildlife species, and act as a <\/span>secure nesting and seasonal migration<\/span> habitat <\/span>for coastal birds<\/span>. Only 42% of mangrove habitats are found within designated protected areas and they are <\/span>under threat.<\/span><\/a> Human related activities such as farmland conversion, aquaculture, and urbanization have led to a 60% loss of habitat. The effects of climate change are further impacting them through storm surges, sea level rise, and erosion.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Having this 2020 global resource available at 10-meter resolution in the <\/span>Living Atlas<\/span><\/a> library allows anyone to take a closer look at these fragile and important ecosystems. You can add this layer directly into ArcGIS Pro and run <\/span>zonal<\/span><\/a> or <\/span>summary statistics<\/span><\/a> or leverage the many options available with <\/span>geoenrichment<\/span><\/a> to better understand the human related impacts and what is driving them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mangrove Mapping<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Objective: Find out where mangroves are globally and highlight them. This kind of map should be minimal in its composition and the focus should be on mangrove ecosystems in the context of where land meets the sea. A dark basemap is perfect to focus our attention and all it took was a few clicks to blend<\/a> <\/span>Firefly<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Human Geography Dark<\/span><\/a> basemaps together, plus some of the awesome ArcGIS <\/span>layer effects<\/span><\/a> for this map to come together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The basemap is broken into two parts. The \u2018background\u2019 basemap is Human Geography Dark Detail and Label and Firefly. The second <\/span>portion<\/span> of the<\/span> \u2018<\/span>basemap<\/span>\u2019 is within the actual map layers<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>World Countries<\/span><\/span><\/a> was <\/span>used so that the land is the darkest thing on the page a<\/span>nd <\/span>disa<\/span>ppears<\/span>. Then <\/span>Human Geography Dark Base helps to mask out the ocean using the blend mode \u2018Hard <\/span>Light<\/span>\u2019,<\/span> so <\/span>its color is multiplied by the background’s color. Her portfolio includes mapping elephants in Thailand, wildlife poachers in the Republic of Palau, land-use issues around Yosemite National Park, and active wildfire incidents for the State of California. Since 2018, Emily has been with Esri's ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World. In this role she serves as lead Cartographer and Senior GIS Engineer for the Environment Team where she styles and designs layers, maps, and applications for the global GIS community.
