We provide custom resources for the <a href=\"http:\/\/chef.io\">Chef IT automation framework<\/a> to save you time and effort, regardless of the size or complexity of your intended ArcGIS Enterprise deployment. And this year, we&#8217;ve been working to expand our tutorials and videos to get you started with Chef Server.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"sidebar","content":"<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Chef Server is one of two basic Chef structures you can use to automate an ArcGIS Enterprise deployment. The other is <strong>Chef Solo<\/strong>, which forgoes a Chef Server component and instead hosts all the necessary resources on the target machine along with the Chef Client. This is ideal for a single-machine deployment &#8211; see <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Esri\/arcgis-cookbook\/wiki\/Deploy-a-full-stack-ArcGIS-Enterprise-on-a-single-machine\">our workflow for a base deployment using Chef Solo here<\/a> &#8211; but doesn&#8217;t have the scalability of a Chef Server workflow.<\/p>\n","image_reference":false,"layout":"standard","image_reference_figure":"","snippet":"","spotlight_name":"","section_title":"","position":"Right","spotlight_image":false},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>The Chef Server process is desirable for a lot of reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It&#8217;s centralized.<\/strong> From a workstation, you customize your setup scripts and parameters, then send all your resources to the Chef Server. Each machine in the deployment, via the Chef Client software, gets the necessary resources from the Chef Server and executes your instructions. You can monitor progress at every stage from the server&#8217;s Chef Manage site.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It&#8217;s efficient.<\/strong> Rather than moving from machine to machine, installing component by component, you can use our custom resources to run all the tasks involved in installation and configuration. You can even write and run a script (such as in PowerShell) to execute each task in order while you sit back and learn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/author\/j_nelson\/\">John Nelson&#8217;s latest cartography trick<\/a> (or get some other work done &#8211; no judgment here).<\/li>\n<li><strong>It&#8217;s scalable and replicable.<\/strong> The real power of Chef Server comes when you have a bunch of machines to deploy your system across. Given its centralized structure, it takes hardly more effort to set up an eight-machine Enterprise deployment than it does a two-machine deployment.
