This is the Microsoft technology that previously made support for personal geodatabases possible in ArcMap within ArcGIS Desktop. Also, there are no 64-bit versions of these libraries and ArcGIS Pro is a 64-bit application. Since the technology used to make personal geodatabases is no longer supported and Microsoft is advising against using these deprecated formats, there is no viable or supported path forward for offering personal geodatabases in ArcGIS Pro.\u00a0Moving forward, our recommendation is to migrate your data from a personal geodatabase to either a file or mobile geodatabase. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-pro\/data-management\/bridging-data-create-and-use-ole-db-connections-in-arcgis-pro\/\">Bridging Data<\/a><\/strong> is the <strong>second<\/strong> blog in this series. I, on the other hand, had just graduated from my alma mater, Florida State University, and was starting fresh in my new job working in the GIS department at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection using ArcView 3.x and spatial databases.<\/p>\n<p>Our initial focus was helping our department get past the so-called &#8220;Millennium Bug&#8221; and the Y2K (year 2000) scare. Soon after, interest in the use and benefits of GIS started to increase throughout our department, and our small GIS team began to grow to fill the volume of incoming requests.<\/p>\n<p>A year later, in early 2001, I started my career as an instructor at Esri, teaching <em>Migrating from ArcView 3.x to 8.x<\/em> and <em>Introduction to Geodatabases<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The ArcGIS 8.0 release introduced the geodatabase as the common data storage and management framework for all ArcGIS software. While some were hesitant at first, interest in migrating data from shapefiles and coverages to take advantage of new behaviors available only within the geodatabase grew exponentially.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, geodatabases could only be implemented in the 32-bit ArcGIS Desktop application as either personal or multiuser. A single-user personal geodatabase used the Microsoft Jet format, was stored in a single Microsoft Access file with the .mdb file extension, and had a 2 GB size limitation, whereas multiuser geodatabases were stored in a database management system (DBMS) managed by ArcSDE. Support for the file geodatabase was later added in late 2006 with the ArcGIS 9.2 release, as it offered more functionality, a larger data storage capacity, and better performance than the personal geodatabase.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h2><strong>Now<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Fast-forward almost a quarter of a century to present day, and I\u2019m now a product engineer on the geodatabase development team. The <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/help\/data\/geodatabases\/overview\/what-is-a-geodatabase-.htm\">geodatabase<\/a> is still the native data structure for ArcGIS and the primary data format used for editing and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/data-management\">data management<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/arcgis-pro\/overview\">ArcGIS Pro<\/a> is the next-generation, full-featured professional desktop GIS application. For example, while running a tool in the geoprocessing pane, you can continue to navigate a view or add a dataset to the Contents pane.<\/p>\n<p>ArcGIS Pro uses a project-centric approach to keep all your maps, layouts, tools, geodatabases, and connections in one place. This enables you to better collect, store, maintain, prepare, and share your data across a suite of ArcGIS products, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/arcgis-online\/overview\">ArcGIS Online<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/arcgis-enterprise\/overview\">ArcGIS Enterprise<\/a>, and work across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/about-arcgis\/overview\">ArcGIS<\/a> system through Web GIS.<\/p>\n<p>While ArcGIS Pro supports multiple data sources, it is designed to work with and leverage the capabilities of the geodatabase as the center of your spatial data storage and GIS data management workflows.<\/p>\n<p>Three types of geodatabases are supported in ArcGIS Pro:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/help\/data\/geodatabases\/manage-file-gdb\/file-geodatabases.htm\">File geodatabase<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/help\/data\/geodatabases\/manage-mobile-gdb\/mobile-geodatabases.htm\">Mobile geodatabase<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/help\/data\/geodatabases\/introduction\/geodatabase-administration.htm#GUID-25CDE859-C0DC-40E6-B15B-B0B0EECD4D6B\">Enterprise geodatabase<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h3><strong>But wait!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Why is the personal geodatabase (.mdb) not listed as a supported type of geodatabase in ArcGIS Pro?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve heard, we&#8217;ve seen, and we understand that many of our users have wanted the personal geodatabase to be supported in ArcGIS Pro. Some have considered delaying their migration to ArcGIS Pro until personal geodatabases are supported. However, there are several key reasons why the personal geodatabase (.mdb) has not and will not be supported in ArcGIS Pro, including the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Microsoft has deprecated support for Microsoft Jet Database Engine 4.0 libraries and considers the Data Access Objects (DAO) technology obsolete<u>. <\/u><\/li>\n<li>ArcGIS Desktop 8.x, 9.x, and 10.x used the Microsoft JET 4 libraries, including Jet Data Access Objects (DAO)<u>,<\/u> to work with the personal geodatabase. ArcGIS Pro is a 64-bit application, but there is no 64-bit version of the deprecated Microsoft JET libraries for it to use, and Jet DAO is considered an obsolete technology. This is also why ArcGIS Server never supported personal geodatabase<u>s<\/u>.<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft libraries that were used to work with personal geodatabases do not exist anymore in the current versions of Windows and won&#8217;t be available on the 64-bit Windows operating system.<\/li>\n<li>Since Microsoft does not support them, nor do they support any alternative or replacement libraries, there\u2019s no viable path forward to support personal geodatabases in ArcGIS Pro.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more specific details, take a look at some excerpts from Microsoft\u2019s documentation:<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"sidebar","content":"<p><strong>Here\u2019s an excerpt from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sql\/connect\/connect-history?view=sql-server-ver15&amp;redirectedfrom=MSDN#microsoft-or-windows-data-access-components\">Microsoft or Windows Data Access Components<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\">No new features will be added to components in Microsoft\/Windows Data Access Components (MDAC\/WDAC) and it isn&#8217;t recommended to use them for new application development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\"><strong>Deprecated MDAC\/WDAC Components:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\">These components are still supported in the current release of MDAC\/WDAC, but they might be removed in future releases. When developing new applications, Microsoft recommends that you avoid using these components. Additionally, when you upgrade or modify existing applications, remove any dependency on these components.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Here is what it lists about the <strong>Microsoft Jet Database Engine<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\"><strong>Microsoft Jet Database Engine 4.0:<\/strong>\u00a0Starting with version 2.6, MDAC no longer contains Jet components. In other words, MDAC 2.6, 2.7, and 2.8 don&#8217;t contain Microsoft Jet, the Microsoft Jet OLE DB Provider, the ODBC Desktop Database Drivers, or Jet Data Access Objects (DAO).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\">There&#8217;s no 64-bit version of the Jet Database Engine, the Jet OLEDB Driver, the Jet ODBC Drivers, or Jet DAO available. This API can be used from Microsoft Visual Basic, Microsoft Visual C++, and scripting languages. It was included with Microsoft Office 2000 and Office XP. DAO 3.6 is the final version of this technology. It won&#8217;t be available on the 64-bit Windows operating system.<\/p>\n","image_reference":false,"layout":"standard","image_reference_figure":"","snippet":"","spotlight_name":"","section_title":"","position":"Center","spotlight_image":false},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h2><strong>Moving forward, what\u2019s the future?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>If I&#8217;m currently using a personal geodatabase, what are my options? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are currently using one or more personal geodatabases, these are some of your options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use OLE DB to establish a read-only connection from ArcGIS Pro to your personal geodatabase.<\/li>\n<li>Migrate your data from a personal geodatabase to a file geodatabase.<\/li>\n<li>Migrate your data from a personal geodatabase to a mobile geodatabase.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>OK, so what\u2019s a mobile geodatabase?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In ArcGIS Pro 2.7, Esri introduced a newer geodatabase type based on an SQLite database\u2014the mobile geodatabase. Mobile geodatabases support all the common geodatabase datasets and behaviors, such as domains, subtypes, attribute rules, topologies, parcel fabrics, and utility networks. Click <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/help\/data\/geodatabases\/manage-mobile-gdb\/mobile-geodatabases.htm\">Mobile geodatabases<\/a> to access a complete list of behaviors supported in the mobile geodatabase.<\/p>\n<p>If you are not familiar with the mobile geodatabase, I would also encourage you to check out the following blogs and topics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-pro\/data-management\/look-at-mobile-geodatabases-go-whats-new-in-pro-2-7\/\">Look at Mobile Geodatabases go! <\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-pro\/data-management\/new-data-types-supported-in-the-mobile-geodatabase\/\">New Controller Datasets Supported in the Mobile Geodatabase<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Don\u2019t despair!\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We understand that many questions remain, so this will be an ongoing blog series.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking back to many fond memories of my days teaching the <em>Migrating from ArcView 3.x to 8.x<\/em> course, some users were adamant about not giving up their coverages; did not understand new behaviors like <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/help\/data\/geodatabases\/overview\/an-overview-of-subtypes.htm\">subtypes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/help\/data\/geodatabases\/overview\/an-overview-of-attribute-domains.htm\">domains<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/help\/data\/topologies\/an-overview-of-topology-in-arcgis.htm\">topology<\/a>; or were hesitant to learn about this new thing called the geodatabase.<\/p>\n<p>Do you know what I told them, and what I\u2019m telling you today?<\/p>\n<p>I get it! I can completely understand and relate to the unease of change, as I was once in the exact same position as an end user of our software.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout college and into my first job, all I had ever used and known was ArcView 3.x, shapefiles, and coverages. When I started at Esri, I had two months to learn ArcGIS 8.x, understand the differences, become proficient in it, and start teaching the class on my own.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m optimistic about what\u2019s next!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While I understand everyone who is reading this blog is approaching this migration need and learning opportunity from their unique backgrounds, experiences, and business requirements, and no two situations are typically the same, I have no doubt that you can do this.<\/p>\n<p>Moving forward, you will have a front-row seat as I share the collective insight, steps, and tips from my fellow cohorts (the most awesome group of geodatabase product engineers and developers at Esri) to help guide you through this experience.
