Upon seeing Cooper&#8217;s experimentations in turning that data into a web map, I had two immediate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gut reactions:\u00a0 The first was \u201cWow\u2026so many!\u201d\u00a0 The second was \u201cWait, were Germans actually trolling around in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gulf of Mexico<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> torpedoing U.S. boats?!?\u201d\u00a0 (Indeed, the Axis forces managed to bring the war so close to our backyard that they destroyed the US tanker Benjamin Brewster a scant 50 miles away from New story, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/41d4bd6029044afbb1b9ad805a4731d8\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resurfacing the Past<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I encourage you to do so.\u00a0 Even if you spend your nights snoozing in front of the History Channel, a Jon Meacham tome resting on your chest, there\u2019s bound to be something in this piece that will surprise you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Thinking beyond the data<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Resurfacing the past<\/em> is an extension of a passion project from Paul Heersink, our colleague in the Great White North.\u00a0 For the past eight years, Paul, a program manager with Esri Canada, has painstakingly assembled his database of ships that were lost during World War II, the most comprehensive dataset of its kind to style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brimming with over 14,000 verified locations (with thousands more still being vetted), such a dataset can benefit from the tried-and-true <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/dashboards\/1fe3381b1bdd43c78c9e02f33859c55a\">dashboard<\/a> treatment. Along with co-author Will Hackney, he set out to tease a relatable experience out <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of rows upon rows of geometry and attributes.\u00a0 In this quest, they employed a number of storytelling and cartographic devices.\u00a0 Here are some of the most noteworthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Starting small<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14,000-plus dots\u2026that\u2019s a lot to get your head around.\u00a0 So rather than overload readers at the onset, this story begins with the sinking of a single ship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting small provides the opportunity to bring in a human angle and inject some pathos.\u00a0 From this point, as the narrative gradually transitions to a global scale, hopefully the reader is emotionally
