The ACS provides communities with reliable and timely social, economic, housing, and demographic data every year<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/programs-surveys\/acs\/about\/information-guide.html\"><span class=\"s1\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For those of us interested in using data to bring meaningful change to the places we live, work, and play, it is simply, a national treasure. Data<\/h1>\n<p>One dataset the ACS provides involves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/topics\/population\/migration\/data\/tables\/acs.All.List_1539083929.html\">yearly migration flows<\/a>, detailed at state, county, and metro geographies. We\u2019re going to look at Metro-to-Metro migration flows to get a sense of domestic metro migration characteristics. The table we\u2019re looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/data\/tables\/2019\/demo\/geographic-mobility\/metro-to-metro-migration.html\">can be located<\/a> at <em>Metro Area-to-Metro Area Migration Flows: 2015-2019<\/em> &#8211;&gt; <em>Metro Area-to-Metro Area In-, Out-, Net, and Gross Migration<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Note: Data downloaded from US Census Bureau may have a defined cell range applied. If so, make sure range includes all data rows and header row.\u00a0 See more <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/insights\/latest\/get-started\/prepare-your-excel-data.htm\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The dataset includes two locations (Geography A and Geography B) along with flow, counterflow, net migration and gross migration (and margin of errors for each variable). We\u2019re primarily interested in net migration between different areas so you can remove the other fields and cleanup the data a bit. You can also download a refined version of the data <a href=\"https:\/\/lacs.maps.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=8dca6ed1936142a3bae5c2ae1d6d6ff9\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Net Migration<\/h1>\n<p>Since we\u2019re going to want to see this data on a map, let\u2019s grab the spatial data as well. The 2019 metro area boundaries can be downloaded through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/cgi-bin\/geo\/shapefiles\/index.php\">Census Tigerline site<\/a>. However, the migration dataset includes a catch-all geography (areas within the US but not in a metro), so I modified the census boundaries to include a placeholder for this. You can download the updated metro boundaries <a href=\"https:\/\/lacs.maps.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=cee2b9527ad146e98ab7727bf515dcd3\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re now ready to import into ArcGIS Insights.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing you\u2019ll want to do is filter out null records. For the migration dataset, this occurs because the Census records international in-migration but does not count international out-migration. You\u2019ll instead focus on domestic migration patterns.<\/p>\n<p>1) Open a new workbook and add <em>MetroNetMigration_2015to2019.xlsx<\/em> and <em>CoreBasedStatisticalAreas_2019.zip<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>Rename <em>MetroNetMigration_15to19.Table1<\/em> to <code>Net Migration (2015-2019)<\/code>.<\/li>\n<li>Rename <em>Core_Based_Statistical_Areas_(2019)<\/em> to <code>CBSA (2019)<\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>2) Apply a dataset filter on <em>Net Migration (2015-2019)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>Click the <strong>Dataset options <\/strong>button and choose <strong>Advanced filter <\/strong>from the menu.
