In this post, I\u2019ll demonstrate how you can use Arcade to map diversity.<\/p>\n<p>First, I&#8217;ll provide details describing my methodology, then we&#8217;ll explore the results with a ton of maps.<\/p>\n<h2>Diversity index<\/h2>\n<p>When the 2020 United States Census numbers were released, the summary of responses showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2021\/08\/2020-united-states-population-more-racially-ethnically-diverse-than-2010.html\">the U.S. is more diverse than ever<\/a>. The Living Atlas has a treasure trove of data, including <a href=\"https:\/\/esri.maps.arcgis.com\/home\/group.html?id=16b3a5ac36834ed6b3f16261d9a988ea#overview\">up-to-date data from the American Community Survey (ACS)<\/a>. I load the data in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/mapviewer\/index.html\">ArcGIS Online Map Viewer<\/a> to see if I can learn something new by experimenting with various <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/collections\/9dd9f03ac2554da4af78b42020fb40c1\">Smart Mapping styles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I came across <a href=\"https:\/\/arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=527ea2b5ba814c8ca1c34a2945e1b751\">this layer<\/a> containing data for languages spoken in the home. It reports the number of people speaking languages in the following categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>English<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Spanish<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Asian and Pacific Islander languages<\/strong> &#8211; Includes Chinese (incl. Mandarin, Cantonese), Japanese, Korean, Hmong, Vietnamese, Khmer, Thai, Lao, Burmese, Tibetan, Turkish, Tagalog (incl. Filipino), Ilocano, Samoan, Hawaiian, Cebuano (Bisayan), Iloko (Ilocano), Samoan, Indonesian.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other Indo-European languages<\/strong> &#8211; Includes French (incl. Cajun), Haitian creole, Italian, Portuguese, German, Yiddish, Pennsylvania Dutch, Greek, Russian, Polish, Serbo-Croatian, Ukrainian, Armenian, Persian (incl. Since language diversity isn\u2019t a field contained in this layer, I decided to write an Arcade expression to create a language diversity index. Arcade provides an avenue to calculate any value within the context of the map even though I don\u2019t own this data.<\/p>\n<p>As opposed to predominance, which focuses on the most common category, a <strong>diversity map<\/strong> will communicate the variety within the area. Low diversity areas will coincide with areas that show strong predominance for one category.<\/p>\n<h2>Simpson\u2019s Diversity Index<\/h2>\n<p>I chose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statisticshowto.com\/simpsons-diversity-index\/\">Simpson\u2019s Diversity Index<\/a> to calculate diversity using Arcade. If there are five groups, where one has 100 individuals and the others each have zero, the function will return <code>0<\/code>. Values of 70 or higher are considered very high diversity (these are the solid brown areas) and values of 30 or lower represent low diversity areas (these are the solid green areas).<\/p>\n<p>Since the average diversity index of Census tracts in the U.S. is 25, I could have reasonably used that value as the middle point of my color ramp. That would show areas that have a higher language diversity than the national average.<\/p>\n<p>So why use 50 as the inflection point? the five categories used to calculate diversity are aggregates: Asian and Pacific Islander languages, Other Indo-European languages, and Other languages. The remaining two categories are individual languages: English and Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>Using aggregate data is problematic for calculating diversity because it doesn&#8217;t consider the diversity that exists <em>within<\/em> the aggregate categories. Many people in these groups speak different languages, but are represented within a single category in the languages layer. Because of this, I was eager to explore the diversity that exists <strong>within<\/strong> Asian populations.<\/p>\n<p>I used the same Simpson&#8217;s Diversity Index Arcade function in the layer&#8217;s style. This includes 25 unique categories from regions of South America, Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean islands, and Spain.<\/p>\n<p>The results almost look like the inverse of the map of diversity among specific Asian groups. Most census tracts in the United States show low diversity among Hispanic and Latino groups. High population areas in Florida and the east coast are exceptions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arcgis.com\/apps\/mapviewer\/index.html?webmap=331be9220a234f629a120bb9b0809310\"><strong>Click to view This may include differences in race, ethnicity, language, culture, religion, age, gender and many other categories. As I reflect on my associations and friendships with neighbors, coworkers, and other associates from all sorts of backgrounds, I am reminded of two things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>We are alike in many ways; we are all human, and experience the same emotions (though through different life experiences, which leads to the second point).<\/li>\n<li>We are all truly unique whether or not we have similar backgrounds or belong to the same demographic categories; our uniqueness shows we our more diverse than data often indicate.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>While the maps I shared above focus on the diversity of specific categories, don&#8217;t forget that more diversity exists in each area than the data actually reports.<\/p>\n<p>Creating a diversity index is just one of many examples where you can use Arcade to calculate new values to display custom content in web maps.
