","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">Having just attended yet another successful <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">GEOINT Symposium<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">, I\u2019m taking the time to reflect on this year\u2019s trends<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">For those unfamiliar, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">the GEOINT Symposium<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">has been<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\"> the premier event <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">in the United States <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">for <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">geospatial intelligence professionals<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\"> since 2004<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">This year\u2019s theme was \u201cThe Foundation of Intelligence,\u201d<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">which was particularly appropriate given the many ways we\u2019ve seen imagery used this year <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">to inform efforts around growing <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">global <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">conflicts, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">climate concerns, and new infrastructure aspirations.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">Having attended <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">GEOINT<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">about 10 times now<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">I was also inspired by <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">influx<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\"> of<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">new minds and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">fresh perspectives that were <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">engaged<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\"> in discussion this year. Th<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">e<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">re was a<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">palpable <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">buzz of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">innovatio<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">n<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">with many examples of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">proven strategies and modern technologies<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">combining<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\"> and working<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">together<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">Many<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">of the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">discussions<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\"> in which <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">I <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">participated revolved <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">around <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">accessibility of imagery content<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">analysis, and data sharing<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253438226 BCX9\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW253438226 BCX9\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">See Places and Situations in Richer Detail<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As many have noticed, the sheer number of satellite companies, or imagery content providers, has been growing steadily over the past decade. So, it wasn\u2019t surprising that there was such a strong presence this year at the conference as well\u2014from more established players like MAXAR and Airbus to promising new start-ups like Albedo, Xplore, and Umbra Space.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Last year, Esri\u2019s Director of Global Business Development, Richard Cooke, noted in his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis\/imagery\/whats-going-on-in-the-world-of-imagery-and-remote-sensing\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">post-GEOINT blog<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> an emerging new wave of larger satellites with higher resolutions. This promise has since been delivered. The imagery shared by some of the more established content providers at GEOINT was simply exquisite. I\u2019m especially excited for what this means for geographic information systems (GIS) analysts though. Paired with GIS technology, the value of imagery expands exponentially. Imagery layered with other spatial data gives a holistic, realistic picture of the landscape, Earth\u2019s systems, and human activity.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For those who may have missed it, Esri and Airbus announced our partnership back in March to integrate Airbus\u2019 imagery directly into ArcGIS Online. I was also approached by other commercial imagery providers at the conference that are either in the process or want to do this as well. Together, both the established and newer imagery providers are making imagery more accessible than ever.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Monitor Conditions and Detect Change Quickly<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beyond the resolution trends, we are now also seeing what I\u2019ll coin as the \u201con-demand\u201d tasking trend. This is made possible by some of the larger constellations available now. Previously, analysts had to rely on archives of imagery from previous collection activities, hoping they\u2019d find imagery that was applicable to their use case or spend more than archived imagery and wait weeks to request specific areas of interest from a satellite. However, some imagery providers are looking to change this workflow by offering automated real-time tasking. Imagine being in your workspace, selecting an area, paying a few hundred dollars, and having a fresh satellite photo in only an hour. This capability is no longer just a dream, it is quickly being made a reality.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Much of my work through the years has been with government departments, working to help them make better decisions using geospatial data. On-demand commercial imagery like this could be a game changer, especially for those focused on safety, transparency, and resource allocation. Having real-time access to imagery provides unparalleled insights into what\u2019s actually happening on the ground.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Create a Common Operating Picture<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lastly, another big shift I saw this year was on working within a secured cloud. While government has always required work to be on-premises, decision-makers are seeing the power of cloud capabilities to support a common operating picture and the sharing of intelligence cross-departmentally. This increased volume of data requires human processes that can not only handle but take advantage of this growing influx. This was one main reason why Esri expanded our imagery offering last July, bringing image management and analysis capabilities to the cloud so our customers can easily host, analyze, and stream imagery and raster collections.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Conclusion<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Amidst all the conversation on rapidly increasing and accessible data, automated and powerful analysis, and a new focus on sharing capabilities, I am excited to put these new trends into practice.
