Learn more about how to use these new tools by reading the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/utility-network\/data-management\/analyzing-topology-errors\">Analyzing topology errors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/community.esri.com\/t5\/arcgis-utility-network-blog\/resolving-topology-errors\/ba-p\/1591377\">Resolving topology errors<\/a> articles.<\/p>\n<p>In the years since we&#8217;ve released the ArcGIS Utility Network, we&#8217;ve discovered that a handful of different topology errors account for the majority of errors that our users experience on a daily basis. We&#8217;ve greatly expanded our online documentation on this topic to include all of the errors along with the approaches for resolving them.\u00a0 However, because these errors and their resolutions are specific to different industries, we&#8217;ve decided to develop this blog that provides examples and screenshots for all of these major issues and their corresponding solutions.<\/p>\n<p>By reading this article you will be better equipped to understand how to interpret these errors and what techniques you can apply to the decision-making process for resolving them.\u00a0 We continue to improve the error management and quality assurance experience and hope that this series of content will go a long way to improving your daily experience.<\/p>\n<p>There is a disclaimer with the content you will find in these articles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Resolutions that require adding or removing rules will require users to disconnect from the system while the admin disables and enabled the topology to make the change.\u00a0 Changing your rules can also introduce new errors if existing features were relying on those rules, so it&#8217;s recommended you test out these changes in a staging environment or file geodatabase first.<\/li>\n<li>The examples provided in this, and other articles made use of the latest data models and software at the time of publication.\u00a0 There may be slight changes made to user interfaces or data models over time.<\/li>\n<li>The errors and proposed solutions were all manufactured for demonstration purposes only and resolutions for the same error will vary due to differences in business requirements, data model, and drawing standards at every utility.<\/li>\n<li>The validation framework is only able to validate features that have valid geometries and are connected.\u00a0 If your data is not well snapped or has invalid geometries the framework will not be able to perform additional validation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h1>Examples<\/h1>\n<p>Check out one of the following articles for examples of how to identify and resolve specific types of errors.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-pro\/electric-gas\/utility-network-error-management-electric-topology-errors\/\">Electric<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-pro\/electric-gas\/utility-network-error-management-gas-topology-errors\/\">Gas and Pipeline<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-pro\/water\/utility-network-error-management-water-topology-errors\/\">Water<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-pro\/electric-gas\/utility-network-fantastic-errors-and-how-to-fix-them-network-topology\">Generic Topology Errors<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t already, you should read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/utility-network\/data-management\/dirty-area-management-with-the-utility-network\">Dirty area management with the utility network<\/a> article to learn how the Utility Network uses dirty areas to track and validate edits to the network topology.<\/p>\n<h1>Cheat Sheet<\/h1>\n<p>Below you can find a table that can be used as a quick reference for the most common types of topology errors customers encounter with their data.\u00a0 You can download a printer-friendly version of this table from the <a href=\"https:\/\/community.esri.com\/t5\/arcgis-utility-network-documents\/utility-network-error-management-refence\/ta-p\/1189472\">Utility Network Community<\/a> on the Esri Community page.\u00a0 Feel free to save a copy of it and refer back to it often!<\/p>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Error Type<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Error Description<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Resolutions<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Junction-Edge Errors<\/td>\n<td>8: Invalid connectivity \u2013 No junction edge rule<\/td>\n<td>\n<ol>\n<li>If you determine that one of the features has an\u00a0<strong>incorrect asset group \/ asset type<\/strong>\u00a0or the features have not been drawn correctly than you should\u00a0<strong>fix the incorrect data<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>If the affected features have been drawn correctly and\u00a0<strong>should be allowed to connect<\/strong>\u00a0then your geodatabase administrator can\u00a0<strong>add a rule<\/strong>\u00a0to your network to allow them to connect.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Ambiguous Connectivity<\/td>\n<td>9: Invalid connectivity \u2013 More than one junction edge rule applicable<\/td>\n<td>\n<ol>\n<li>In most cases this error is caused by\u00a0<strong>not populating the terminal connections<\/strong> for a device and line. You should first try to <strong>use the terminal connections tool<\/strong>\u00a0to assign the terminal connections between the line and device.<\/li>\n<li>If the type of line that has an error can\u00a0<strong>never be connected<\/strong>\u00a0to one of the terminals or features, then you should\u00a0<strong>remove the invalid rule<\/strong>\u00a0that allows for that connection.<\/li>\n<li>If you have\u00a0<strong>stacked junctions and\/or devices<\/strong>\u00a0that are connected to a line then you should\u00a0<strong>move one of the features<\/strong>\u00a0so they are not stacked.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Edge-Edge Errors<\/td>\n<td>10: Invalid connectivity \u2013 The edges are different subtypes and cannot connect<\/td>\n<td>\n<ol>\n<li>If the two features\u00a0<strong>should be the same type\u00a0<\/strong>of line then you can\u00a0<strong>change the asset type\u00a0<\/strong>on one of the lines so their asset types match.<\/li>\n<li>If\u00a0<strong>both lines are properly classified<\/strong>\u00a0then you will need to\u00a0<strong>create a point feature between the two lines<\/strong>. When creating this feature you will need to make sure that the newly created point either has an edge-junction-edge rule with both the lines or it has a junction-edge rule for each individual line.<\/li>\n<li>If the\u00a0<strong>two lines shouldn&#8217;t be connected<\/strong>\u00a0then you should\u00a0<strong>move one of the two lines\u00a0<\/strong>so they are no longer connected.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Stacked Points<\/td>\n<td>25: Stacked point features<\/td>\n<td>\n<ol>\n<li>If the stacked feature appear to be\u00a0<strong>duplicate features<\/strong>, or one of the features is invalid then you should\u00a0<strong>delete one of the stacked features<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>If\u00a0<strong>both features are valid<\/strong>\u00a0then you will need to\u00a0<strong>move one of the features<\/strong>\u00a0so it is no longer stacked. You may need to redraw or add new lines to maintain connectivity for the area.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Invalid Terminal Connection<\/td>\n<td>36:\u00a0The line feature has an invalid terminal<\/td>\n<td>\n<ol>\n<li>If the<strong>\u00a0line is not connected to a device with terminals,<\/strong>\u00a0you should edit the line and\u00a0<strong>set the terminal attribute to None <\/strong>using the attributes pane<\/li>\n<li>If the\u00a0<strong>line is connected to a device with terminals<\/strong>\u00a0you will need to edit the line and\u00a0<strong>reset the terminal attribute to None<\/strong> using the attributes pane before you can <strong>correct the terminal using the terminal connections tool<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Midspan Terminal Device<\/td>\n<td>38:\u00a0Devices with multiple terminals cannot be midspan<\/td>\n<td>\n<ol>\n<li>If the\u00a0<strong>device is drawn correctly<\/strong>\u00a0then you should\u00a0<strong>split the line<\/strong>\u00a0it is connected to and use the terminal connections tool to assign the terminal connections between the line and device.<\/li>\n<li>If the\u00a0<strong>device is not drawn correctly<\/strong>\u00a0then you should\u00a0<strong>move the device<\/strong>\u00a0to its correct position. You may need to run the assign terminal connections tool once you&#8217;ve moved the device.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h1>Viewing Rules<\/h1>\n<p>Some of the errors require that you know what network rules are configured in your database and there are several ways you can do this.\u00a0 For instructions on how to review all the
