Within a few weeks of publishing the layers in November of 2021, we received several requests for a &#8220;fast-drawing cartographic version&#8221;. Check out these blogs that share more about using the blend modes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-online\/mapping\/blend-modes-for-thematic-maps\/\">Blend Modes for Thematic Maps<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-online\/mapping\/highlighting-areas-effects\/\">Highlighting Areas using Effects and Blend Modes<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How we Made these Layers<\/h3>\n<p>The item page descriptions for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=564afc8398874a659e6bd964ce783f1d\">populated footprint<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=dece835b488a468788729b78479790d7\">urban density footprint<\/a> layers provide the steps we used to create each layer.\u00a0 The processing for both layers included reclassifying the data to 1-bit integer rasters, which makes them very efficient to draw. We tested using an 8-bit image with percentile density values and found it drew more than four times slower. That made it easy for us to choose the option of two 1-bit layers.<\/p>\n<h3>How we Hosted these Layers<\/h3>\n<p>We took advantage of a relatively new capability:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/arcgis-image\/options\/arcgis-online\">ArcGIS Image for ArcGIS Online<\/a>.\u00a0 All we needed to do was create the 1-bit TIFF files of each footprint of population and then use ArcGIS Online to upload and tile them.<\/p>\n"}],"authors":[{"ID":4351,"user_firstname":"Charlie","user_lastname":"Frye","nickname":"Charlie Frye","user_nicename":"cfrye","display_name":"Charlie Frye","user_email":"cfrye@esri.com","user_url":"","user_registered":"2018-03-02 00:15:58","user_description":"I am the Chief Cartographer at Esri and work on the Living Atlas Team.
