One of the core missions of ArcGIS <\/span>StoryMaps<\/span> has always been to enable people to tell place-based stories around the world that combine geography, media, and narrative in a way that no other storytelling platform does.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That is why our team prioritized <\/span><\/span>bringing the Classic Map Tour template into ArcGIS <\/span>StoryMaps<\/span><\/span><\/a> from the start. Its seamless blend of maps, media, and text enables an audience to virtually <\/span>see<\/span> the world <\/span>through the eyes of the<\/span> storyteller<\/span>, without requiring any GIS skill or experience to author. It takes just a few clicks to set up a sequence of geographic points that readers scroll through in order, in a layout that we call guided<\/em> map tour. Soon after, we added a second layout to map tour<\/a>, which we dubbed explorer<\/em> map tour. This analog to the Classic Shortlist template displays points in a list or grid and permits readers to browse as many or as few as they wish, in any order they wish.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s no surprise, then, that map tour remains one of the most popular features in ArcGIS StoryMaps. In fact, between January 2021 and February 2022, nearly one in five publicly published stories contained at least one map tour. Those kinds of figures are big part of the reason we\u2019ve stayed<\/span>\u00a0focused on<\/span> updating<\/span> and improving<\/span> the map tour experience. <\/span>Here are some of the creative ways you can use those enhancements to spice up map tours in your stories.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Making progress<\/h2>\n

For some guided tours, it can help to see the relationship between points as you scroll from one to another. As of November, 2022<\/a>, storytellers can enable tour progress lines, which light up as readers get to each point, while the lines connecting points still to come remain more faint. To turn progress lines on, simply go into the map options and toggle the relevant button, as demonstrated in the short video below.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind that not every tour benefits from progress lines. They’re most effective for tours with points that convey a sequential order\u2014like, say, an itinerary\u2014and don’t make as much sense for tours that are more of a collection of separate examples. They also work best when the points are arranged geographically so that the progress lines don’t tangle too much and cause a visually messy situation. The story Planning a trip to see Scotland’s Castles<\/em><\/a> happens to check those boxes, and you can see how progress lines can enhance the guided tour experience for readers.<\/p>\n

Divide and conquer<\/h2>\n

Scroll fatigue is very real\u2014too many slides or tour points risks an audience\u2019s eyes glazing over. Fortunately, the <\/span><\/span>August, 2022<\/span><\/span><\/span> update to <\/span><\/span>ArcGIS <\/span>StoryMaps<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> gave storytellers the ability to start <\/span>a guided map<\/span> tour at whatever number they choose (up through the triple digits, at least).<\/span> What this means is longer tours can effectively be \u201csplit\u201d into more digestible chunks within the same story, or even across multiple stories<\/span> in a collection<\/span>;<\/span> their numbering can remain <\/span>in the same sequence throughout simply by starting each tour with the next number after final stop in the previous tour.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"sidebar","content":"

Tip<\/strong>: Remember, if you\u2019re starting with an already fully built guided tour, you can also use the More options<\/strong> menu in the slide panel to duplicate a tour block within a story. For example, our team originally put together the <\/span><\/span>World Heritage in Danger story<\/span><\/span><\/a> in part to show off guided tour when it was first rolled out. There are four different, two-point guided tour blocks in the story; now, with custom numbering, we can <\/span>make those blocks feel like they’re all part of one cohesive tour of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>UNESCO World Heritage Sites around the globe.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The final countdown<\/h2>\n

But wait, there\u2019s more when it comes to numbering! We\u2019ve also introduced the ability <\/span>to have a guided tour\u2019s points appear in <\/span><\/span>descending<\/span><\/span> order. <\/span>This functionality is great for \u201cT-minus\u201d style countdowns (e.g., documenting <\/span>the things that happened leading up to an important event) or for running through a ranked list from last to first. A <\/span>more whimsical<\/span> example of that use is <\/span><\/span>this tour of <\/span>my top ten favorite Minor League Baseball venues<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

All of<\/span> the numbering options are found inside the <\/span><\/span>More options<\/span><\/span><\/strong> menu<\/strong> (represented by three dots) that\u2019s visible <\/span><\/span>at the bottom of the tour block<\/span><\/span><\/span> when the slide panel <\/span><\/span>is unfurled\u2014the full process is demonstrated in the video below.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

See the world in three dimensions<\/h2>\n

In <\/span><\/span>December, 2021<\/span><\/span><\/a>, we added<\/span> an important choice to the <\/span><\/span>Map options<\/span><\/span><\/strong> of map tour (both guided and explorer<\/span> layouts<\/span>): whether to toggle your tour into <\/span>a three-dimensional scene.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now, as cool as that is, it\u2019s important to use discerning judgment<\/span> when deciding whether to press that 3D button or not. <\/span>Not every tour (nor every <\/span>basemap<\/span>) is suited for the 3D effect. Tours with points that are very far apart can be f<\/span>un <\/span>for the sweeping transition from point to point. At the other end of the spectrum, a hyper-localized tour can work nicely, too\u2014if there\u2019s sufficient terrain in the environment. <\/span><\/span>Check out this story<\/span><\/span><\/a> for a more thorough discussion of which situations work best for 3D cartography.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"sidebar","content":"

Tip<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: <\/span>When setting tour point locations for a tour that has been toggled into 3D, you can also set the angle of the tour point view; a more oblique angle can help bring the local terrain into sharper relief. B.Y.O.B(asemap).<\/h2>\n

Fifteen<\/span> commonly used<\/span> basemaps<\/span> are <\/span>initially <\/span>offered <\/span>by the<\/span> basemap<\/span> picker<\/span> when configuring a map tour in ArcGIS <\/span>StoryMaps<\/span>. While these cover a wide variety of uses, sometimes it helps to <\/span>be able to add a little more context to a tour, so we\u2019ve also given storytellers the option to <\/span>bring in a web map to serve as a tour\u2019s <\/span>basemap. J<\/span>ust <\/span>click<\/span> <\/span>Browse more maps<\/span><\/span><\/strong> from the <\/span>basemap<\/span> picker in the <\/span><\/span>Map options<\/span><\/span><\/strong> for a tour and you\u2019ll have access to all of your own web maps, plus those that you\u2019ve favorited, are housed in your organization, or were produced by the ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Note that<\/span> when a web map is being used<\/span> within<\/span> a map tour, you won\u2019t have <\/span>direct <\/span>control over layer visibility; that would need to be set in map viewer first. <\/span>Also, all pop-ups will be automatically disabled so as not to distract from the tour experience itself.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"sidebar","content":"

Don’t lose sight of the big picture<\/h2>\n

Also in the map options, you have the ability to turn on an Overview map<\/strong>, which is a little globe that will appear in the corner of the map for each tour point and act as a locator map, showing where each location is in geographic context with the wider world. The overview map will automatically change as readers scroll or navigate through the tour.<\/p>\n
