Here\u2019s how you can quickly make your own ArcGIS Online Hurricane Irene map, add geo-located tweets, and share your map with others in\u00a0three quick and easy steps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1:\u00a0Get your map<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can start off with a new map and hunt for services to add, but there\u2019s no reason to do that when there are a number of\u00a0hurricane maps already available that have been publicly\u00a0shared. So we\u2019ll start\u00a0by going to\u00a0<a title=\"Go to ArcGIS.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ArcGIS.com<\/a>\u00a0and search for the keyword \u201cIrene:\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads2.esri.com\/blogs\/images\/support_3641.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><span id=\"more-364\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We found a lot of matches, but which to use? We decided to look for the most highly rated map by ordering the search results by rating:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads2.esri.com\/blogs\/images\/support_3642.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We find that a Hurricane Irene map by karmstrong is the highest rated map at the moment, with 10 ratings, 6 comments, and over a couple of thousand views:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads2.esri.com\/blogs\/images\/support_3643.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We can learn more about\u00a0<a title=\"View karmstrong's profile\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/user.html?user=karmstrong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">karmstrong<\/a>\u00a0by looking at his profile and can learn more about the map by viewing its details.\u00a0In\u00a0<a title=\"View item details\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=4a9b65e79ea045ffbd1b6087674ee78b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the item\u00a0details<\/a>\u00a0we can\u00a0learn about the layers used to make the map, read comments from others, and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2: Tweak the map<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After reviewing the map details and\u00a0viewing it, we decided this was a great map to start with. But we wanted to tweak it a bit to suit our needs. So we removed the layers we did not want, and zoomed in to a location of interest along the eastern seaboard. We wanted to save these changes, so we saved a copy of the map as our own. Optionally we could change the name, and add more to the map description.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3: Add Tweets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now that the map has been saved with our changes, we wanted to add tweets to keep track of what\u2019s going on and then share it with others. To do so we clicked Share:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads2.esri.com\/blogs\/images\/support_3645.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And checked the box to make it publicly available. Then clicked Make a Web Application to view the template gallery:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads2.esri.com\/blogs\/images\/support_3644.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And chose the Twitter template. If we wanted we\u00a0could download the template, modifiy it, and publish it from our own website, but\u00a0it\u2019s easiest\u00a0to use it \u201cas-is\u201d as an Esri-hosted application (we covered this in an\u00a0<a title=\"View blog post\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/Support\/blogs\/arcgisonline\/archive\/2011\/05\/09\/using-arcgis-online-hosted-applications.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier blog post<\/a>). Click the thumbnail to preview it, then copy and paste the URL to share with others.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads2.esri.com\/blogs\/images\/support_3649.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This template includes a Twitter\u00a0tool that you can use to enter a search string<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads2.esri.com\/blogs\/images\/support_3646.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In just a few minutes, in three easy steps, we accomplished our goal of creating a quick hurricane social media map.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/downloads2.esri.com\/blogs\/images\/support_3647.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4: A minor enhancement (optional)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because we wanted the map to open with tweets that match #hurricane and #irene automatically, we made one final improvement. Along with the URL to the template and our map, we passed along the search strings as inline URL parameters.
