As many have noticed, the Spatial Analyst toolbar changed from ArcGIS 9.x to 10. This change is described in the\u00a0What\u2019s New<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Quick tour<\/a> documentation, but questions about it still come up, so we wanted to share some additional information.<\/span><\/p>\n

What changed?<\/h2>\n

Basically, the drop-down menu that listed the 30 selected Spatial Analyst operations was removed. The interactive exploratory tools (Contour and Hillshade) remain as they were.\u00a0The full scope of Spatial Analyst functionality remains as before in the\u00a0170 geoprocessing tools<\/a>\u00a0which are available in the Spatial Analyst toolbox.<\/p>\n

At ArcGIS 10 you can now easily customize and create your own toolbars and dropdown lists of the geoprocessing tools you use most frequently using the standard Windows\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0toolbar Customize functionality. The old operations from the toolbar were removed to eliminate the confusion many encountered as a result of the toolbar and toolbox having different environment controls. Now, the tools you add to the Spatial Analyst toolbar will honor the same geoprocessing environment as the rest of the system.<\/p>\n

We have also greatly improved the overall\u00a0Search<\/a>\u00a0capabilities of ArcGIS, particularly for\u00a0Finding tools<\/a>. If you search for tools in \u2018tool mode\u2019, you can type partial names, use the arrow keys to navigate to the autocomplete entry you are looking for, and then hit Ctrl+Enter to quickly launch the tool.<\/p>\n

How are the capabilities of the old toolbar accessible?<\/h2>\n

Recently added to the web Help for ArcGIS 10 is a topic that gives a mapping of the capabilities available in the 9.x Spatial Analyst toolbar to the equivalent geoprocessing tools in ArcGIS 10.<\/p>\n

Interactive tools on the toolbar<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0Contour<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Histogram<\/a>\u00a0interactive tools remain on the Spatial Analyst toolbar and operate as before.\u00a0These tools will be activated once a valid raster dataset has\u00a0been added to the TOC (and the extension\u00a0enabled<\/a>, of course).<\/p>\n

What about the Raster Calculator?<\/h2>\n

The Raster Calculator in the toolbar for ArcGIS 9.x has been replaced with the\u00a0Raster Calculator<\/a>\u00a0geoprocessing tool in ArcGIS 10. As you can see below, the new Raster Calculator is quite similar\u00a0yet a little nicer than before:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

This new tool allows you to better integrate Python into your workflows in ModelBuilder.\u00a0You will also have consistent results from Raster Calculator and ArcPy as a result of this integration with the geoprocessing environment. Customizing and adding tools to the Spatial Analyst toolbar<\/h2>\n

You now have much more control over and can\u00a0customize any toolbar<\/a>\u00a0in ArcGIS.\u00a0 This means you can add whatever tools you wish to the Spatial Analyst toolbar. On top of that, by\u00a0adding menus and submenus<\/a>, you can even create a tree structure with\u00a0a customized organization of tools that suits your particular workflows.\u00a0In fact, if so inclined, you could even re-create the old toolbar structure.<\/p>\n
