As we have written about previously in this blog after the earthquake in Haiti (here<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0here<\/a>),\u00a0OpenStreetMap<\/a>\u00a0is a great source of data for you to support disaster and\/or humanitarian operations.\u00a0 Esri has created a specific tool to empower the GIS Community to contribute and use OpenStreetMap data within ArcGIS.\u00a0 The\u00a0ArcGIS Editor for OpenStreetMap<\/a>\u00a0is a free tool you can download for ArcGIS Desktop from\u00a0CodePlex<\/a>. It allows people to do two key things from a disaster management \/ humanitarian relief perspective:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Contribute data to OpenStreetMap using familiar tools<\/li>\n
  2. Enable the conversion of OpenStreetMap (*.osm) files to a feature dataset for editing in ArcGIS<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    <\/span>To get started with the ArcGIS Editor for OpenStreetMap you\u2019ll need\u00a0ArcGIS for Desktop 10<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0ArcGIS Editor for OpenStreetMap<\/a>.\u00a0 Note that the\u00a0ArcGIS for Home Use Program<\/a>\u00a0or the\u00a0Esri Nonprofit Organization Program<\/a>\u00a0are great ways to get Esri software if you don\u2019t have it available to you already and do not intend to use it for commercial gain.\u00a0 You should also be familiar with\u00a0the basics of editing in ArcGIS for Desktop<\/a>\u00a0and with\u00a0OpenStreetMap<\/a>.\u00a0 There is an excellent\u00a0wiki here<\/a>\u00a0to help you understand OpenStreetMap.\u00a0 If you want to contribute edits to OpenStreetMap you\u2019ll need\u00a0OpenStreetMap login credentials<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Making your first edits<\/p>\n

    Once you have you tools loaded and your environment prepared, you\u2019re ready to make your first edits.\u00a0 The first step is to find an area that you are familiar with that needs editing.\u00a0 Perhaps this is a new neighborhood near where you live.<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

    The next step is to find some base layer information to put your edits in context.\u00a0 You can use one of the Basemaps available from the \u2018Add Data<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Add Basemap\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0button. In the image below, we\u2019ve added Imagery upon which we will add data collected from\u00a0GPS<\/a>\u00a0tracks.<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

    GPS tracking is a common way of collecting data for OpenStreetMap as you are collecting the raw geometry of your movement.\u00a0 In the image below, we\u2019ve added GPS tracks to the map.<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

    Next, use the\u00a0Download and Symbolize OSM Data<\/strong>\u00a0tool to download data to a local geodatabase for editing.\u00a0 Note that the larger the area the longer it will take to download the data.\u00a0 Once you have the data downloaded you can go ahead and start editing data just like any other feature.\u00a0 In the image below, the downloaded data from OSM has been added to the map. The GPS tracks have been turned off; however, we will turn them back on again so we can integrate the GPS track data into the downloaded OSM dataset.<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

    When you are done editing you can upload your changes to OpenStreetMap.\u00a0 It is important that any data contributed back to OpenStreetMap is free from licensing restrictions, as data contributed becomes subject to the Open Database License (see\u00a0http:\/\/www.osmfoundation.org\/wiki\/License\/Contributor_Terms<\/a>). OSM users are responsible for ensuring their edits comply with this license. Using the\u00a0Upload OSM Data\u00a0<\/strong>tool you can point to the revision table within your geodatabase where you made your edits, enter your OpenStreetMap login information, and upload your edits to OpenStreetMap.<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

    After a few moments (or up to an hour or so) your new edits will be visible!<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

    Loading OpenStreetMap data<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Another very useful tool with the ArcGIS Editor for OpenStreetMap is the\u00a0Load OSM File<\/strong>\u00a0tool.\u00a0 Often times from a response perspective we\u2019re working in environments that are either completely disconnected or have very little bandwidth.\u00a0 During the response in Haiti it was helpful to have OSM data locally to support operations.\u00a0 Having up-to-date basemap data is really important to support response and recovery activities.\u00a0 OpenStreetMap data is available in\u00a0Planet files or OSM XML format<\/a>\u00a0for the world, region, or country downloads.<\/p>\n

    Once you have an *.OSM file downloaded for a country or region of interest, you can load the data into a geodatabase using the Load OSM File tool.\u00a0 Note that the larger the file the longer it will take to process.<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

    After the data is loaded into the geodatabase you can symbolize the data using the\u00a0Symbolize OSM Data<\/strong>\u00a0tool.\u00a0 Simply point the tool to the appropriate point, line, and polygon features.<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

    After this tool completes, you\u2019ll have a rich collection of basemap features that are available whether you\u2019re connected to the internet or not.\u00a0 This is perfect for forward deployed GIS operations where there may not be good internet connectivity.<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
