Have you ever wanted\u00a0a dynamic table in your map layout that updated attribute information\u00a0as you panned and zoomed or as you navigated\u00a0through a map book? Based upon numerous requests posted on the\u00a0ArcGIS Ideas<\/a>\u00a0site for this specific capability, I\u2019m guessing the answer is YES!<\/p>\n

For those not\u00a0aware, Esri Production Mapping\u2019s\u00a0graphic table element<\/a>\u00a0allows you to create dynamic, data-driven tables in your map layout. The use of dynamic tables is not limited to map documents enabled with\u00a0data driven pages<\/a>, they\u2019re useful in any map document that requires table\u00a0content be updated with changes in the visible extent of the data frame. Below, I\u2019ll highlight steps for adding a simple dynamic table to a state map book that will list the state capitals visible on each page.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

<\/span>Assuming you\u2019ve already built a state map book using data driven pages, let\u2019s go ahead and get started!<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. In ArcMap, click\u00a0Insert<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Graphic Table Element<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  2. In the\u00a0New\u00a0Table<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0dialog box, choose\u00a0Item\u00a0to Row<\/strong>\u00a0for the\u00a0Table Format<\/strong>.\u00a0 Click the\u00a0Wizard<\/strong>\u00a0button.\"\"<\/li>\n
  3. In the\u00a0Set\u00a0Table Format<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0dialog box, choose\u00a0Auto Fit cells<\/strong>\u00a0for the\u00a0Width<\/strong>
    \nand\u00a0Height<\/strong>\u00a0properties so the\u00a0cells will automatically adjust to fit the returned attributes. Click\u00a0Next<\/strong>.    \"\"<\/a><\/li>\n
  4. In the\u00a0Selecting\u00a0table datasources<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0dialog box, choose the\u00a0Cities<\/strong>\u00a0feature layer as the data source. Make sure the\u00a0Always keep table dynamically synchronized with data frame<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>check\u00a0box is checked which will allow the table to update dynamically with\u00a0changes in the data frame extent. Click\u00a0Next<\/strong>.\"\"<\/a><\/li>\n
  5. In the\u00a0Defining\u00a0table fields<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0dialog box, choose the\u00a0CITY_NAME<\/strong>\u00a0field as the table\u2019s source field and click the\u00a0arrow to add it as a table field. Click\u00a0Next<\/strong>.\"\"<\/a><\/li>\n
  6. Choose the\u00a0Cities<\/strong>\u00a0layer as the data source\u00a0and click the\u00a0Filter<\/strong>\u00a0button on\u00a0the\u00a0Defining filters<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0dialog box. Here you can define a filter\u00a0to display just the capital city for the current state in the table.<\/li>\n
  7. In the\u00a0Data Filters<\/strong>\u00a0dialog box, choose\u00a0Visible Extent<\/strong>. Click the\u00a0Add Filter\u00a0<\/strong>button and choose\u00a0Attributes Filter<\/strong>. Build the\u00a0following query;\u00a0\u201cCAPITAL\u201d = \u2018Y\u2019<\/strong>. Click\u00a0OK<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>twice and then\u00a0Finish<\/strong>.\"\"<\/a>Now that the underlying data properties are set, you can start to make cosmetic changes to the table\u2019s appearance to fit your organizations specifications.<\/li>\n
  8. Right-click the table in your map layout and\u00a0choose\u00a0Properties<\/strong>. In the\u00a0Table\u00a0Properties<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>dialog box choose\u00a0the\u00a0Table Format<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>tab and click the\u00a0Table Design<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>button.<\/li>\n
  9. In the\u00a0Item\u00a0to Row Table Design<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0dialog box, delete the\u00a0f1<\/strong>\u00a0(footer) row by right-clicking the cell and choosing\u00a0Delete<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Rows<\/strong>.\"\"<\/a><\/li>\n
  10. To change the table title,\u00a0click the cell containing\u00a0CITY_NAME<\/strong>.\u00a0In the\u00a0Elements<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>window,\u00a0<\/em>click\u00a0 the plus sign (+)\u00a0next to (h1,A).\u00a0 Double-click on\u00a0TextElement<\/strong>\u00a0to access its\u00a0properties. Replace the existing text with\u00a0City Name<\/strong>\u00a0and click\u00a0OK<\/strong>.\"\"<\/a><\/li>\n
  11. Finally, let us assign a color\u00a0to the header cell. In the Table Layout window, right-click the header cell\u00a0and choose\u00a0Properties<\/strong>. Choose\u00a0the\u00a0Background<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>tab and click the\u00a0Symbol<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/li>\n
  12. Click the\u00a0Fill Color<\/strong>\u00a0drop-down arrow and\u00a0choose a color.<\/li>\n
  13. Click\u00a0OK<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>four times to apply the\u00a0table updates.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Now as you navigate through your different map book pages the table will update automatically to display capital cities within the current visible extent.<\/p>\n

    The use case above highlights a very simple example of how you can add dynamic tables to your map layout using the graphic table element. Other examples include dynamic legends, glossaries, and tables that are more complex in design. The possibilities for customization of your tables are almost endless!<\/p>\n
