Here\u2019s how you add tile layers using the ArcGIS.com map viewer.<span id=\"more-26214\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>About tile layers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A tile layer is a set of web-accessible tiles that reside on a server. The tiles are accessed by a direct URL request from the web browser. For example,\u00a0<a title=\"OpenCycleMap\" href=\"http:\/\/www.opencyclemap.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenCycleMap<\/a>\u00a0is a tile layer. Because the tiles in a tile layer are not available as a service, they must be in a specific format on the web server. Client applications consuming the tiles such as ArcGIS.com map viewer use the format to request the appropriate tiles.<\/p>\n<p>Access to the appropriate tiles in the tile layer depends on the URL to the tile layer. The URL contains parameterized values, which are used by the map viewer to dynamically request the tiles that correspond with the extent and scale of the web map as you pan and zoom. This is the tile layer URL for http:\/\/www.opencyclemap.org\/:<br \/>\n<strong>http:\/\/{subDomain}.tile.opencyclemap.org\/cycle\/{level}\/{col}\/{row}.png<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The portions of the URL encapsulated with {} indicate parameterized values, which the map viewer uses to dynamically access specific tiles. Each parameter is detailed below:<\/p>\n<p><strong>{subdomain}<\/strong>\u00a0Subdomains are used by the tile layer provider to distribute tile requests across multiple servers. For example, the OpenCycleMap tile layer contains three subdomains: a,b,c. Not all tile layers have subdomains. If you are unsure of the subdomain labels, contact the tile layer provider.<\/p>\n<p><strong>{level},{col},{row}<\/strong>\u00a0These three parameters are used by the map viewer to dynamically access tiles. No input necessary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to add a tile layer to your web map<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong>\u00a0Open the ArcGIS.com map viewer and click\u00a0<strong>Add<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong>\u00a0Choose\u00a0<strong>Add Layer from Web<\/strong>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26222\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/03\/tile-AddButton.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"104\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong>\u00a0Choose\u00a0<strong>A Tile Layer<\/strong>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26224\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/03\/tile-ATileLayer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"314\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4:<\/strong>\u00a0Enter the layer\u2019s web address in the URL field.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26229\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/03\/tile-TileLayerURL.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"125\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5:<\/strong>\u00a0If the tile layer contains one or more subdomains, specify the tile layer\u2019s subdomain labels in the Subdomains field.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26242\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/03\/tile-Subdomain2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"587\" height=\"80\" \/>Delimit the labels with commas. If you are unsure of the subdomain labels, contact the tile layer provider. If the tile layer does not have any subdomains, the window does not display the subdomain field.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 6:<\/strong>\u00a0Enter\u00a0a title for the tile layer in the\u00a0<strong>Title<\/strong>\u00a0field. \u00a0The title is used as the name of the tile layer in the map contents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 7:<\/strong>\u00a0Enter any copyright information or required attribution information for the tile layer provider in the\u00a0<strong>Credits<\/strong>\u00a0field. The\u00a0ArcGIS.com map viewer\u00a0displays the information you\u00a0enter in the lower right of the map.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 8:<\/strong>\u00a0Click the\u00a0<strong>Set Tile Coverage<\/strong>\u00a0button and set the extent of the tile coverage.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26246\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/03\/tile-CustomExtent1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"342\" \/>Tile coverage represents the extent of all the tiles. This is an optional setting. When the extent is set, tiles are only requested for the extent specified. However, because the tiles are not clipped to fit the extent, tiles may extend beyond the extent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 9:<\/strong>\u00a0Check the box next to\u00a0<strong>Use as Basemap\u00a0<\/strong>if you want to use the layer as a basemap.<\/p>\n<p>You now have all the information you need to add your tile layer to your map.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
