The service is easily accessible through ArcGIS Online and be can be used in any Esri client on the web, desktop, or mobile. This blog post outlines the steps to connect to these feeds in ArcMap. It demonstrates the benefits of working with metadata only available through a dynamic image service.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Load FirstLook into ArcMap<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>From a web browser, go to ArcGIS Online at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/\">http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>In the search box on the top right, enter \u2018<strong>digitalglobe firstlook<\/strong>\u2019<br \/>\nYou should see two services that have been provided by DigitalGlobe for humanitarian purposes, emergency response, and recovery operations. One service contains pre-event imagery and the other provides post-event imagery. Below are the full names:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Philippines DigitalGlobe FirstLook Post-Event Imagery<\/li>\n<li>Philippines DigitalGlobe FirstLook Pre-Event Imagery<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/1_search.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-33231 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/1_search.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"930\" height=\"403\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Pick one of the items you\u2019re interested in then click the small arrow next to\u00a0<strong>Open\u00a0<\/strong>and select \u2018<strong>Open in ArcGIS For Desktop<\/strong>\u2019<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/2_OpenDesktop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-33232 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/2_OpenDesktop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"814\" height=\"664\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a>This will download an ArcGIS Portal Item (*.pitem) file to your browser download folder called\u00a0<strong>item.pitem<\/strong>.<strong>*If you don\u2019t have an Esri Global Account, you\u2019ll have to create one to proceed. Sign up\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/createaccount.html\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(You may already have an account that\u2019s part of an ArcGIS Online organization. You can use that account.).<\/li>\n<li>Double-Click the file to open it in ArcMap. You may be prompted to sign into your ArcGIS Online account if you\u2019re not already signed in.The layer will be available in the table of contents, but you should have a blank screen in the data frame. The data frame appears empty because the item is loaded at the full extent. The imagery only displays below certain scales. (around 1:800,000).<\/li>\n<li>Display the footprint for each scene in the image service.This step will help us visualize all the images that are part of the image service.\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click the layer in the TOC and select\u00a0<strong>Properties<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the properties dialog, select the\u00a0<strong>Display\u00a0<\/strong>tab.<\/li>\n<li>Check the checkbox called \u2018<strong>Display footprints with this symbol<\/strong>\u2019 and \u2018<strong>Display footprints of primary rasters only<\/strong>\u2019. Click\u00a0<strong>OK<\/strong>.<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/3_DisplayTab.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33233\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/3_DisplayTab.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"669\" height=\"538\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The footprints for the service should now display in your data frame. Each polygon in the map represents an individual image.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/4_ArcMap_Footprints.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33234\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/4_ArcMap_Footprints.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1062\" height=\"841\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Add a basemap from ArcGIS Online to provide some reference.<\/li>\n<li>In the tools toobar, select the\u00a0<strong>Add Data<\/strong>\u00a0dropdown and select \u2018<strong>Add Basemap<\/strong>\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Select\u00a0<strong>Imagery with Labels<\/strong>.Feel free to zoom into a collection of images to see the imagery. They\u2019ll draw around a scale of 1:800,000.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/5_AddBasemap.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33235\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/5_AddBasemap.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Apply a definition query on the image service to filter by Sensor.The FirstLook service contains sensors from WorldView-2, WorldView-1, and QuickBird. In this step, we\u2019ll apply a filter to see only imagery from WorldView-2.\n<ol>\n<li>Go back into the layer properties and select the\u00a0<strong>Definition Query<\/strong>\u00a0tab.<\/li>\n<li>Click the\u00a0<strong>Query Builder<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/li>\n<li>Enter the following query:\u00a0<strong>SensorName = \u2018WorldView-2\u2032<\/strong>(See screenshot below).<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/6_DefinitionQuery.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33236\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/6_DefinitionQuery.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"668\" height=\"536\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Your map should now only contain images from the WorldView-2 sensor.<\/li>\n<li>Group images and organize by date. Since this FirstLook service is being constantly updated with new images, there are many scenes stacked on top of each other. This is not always the best way to visualize the imagery. Luckily the FirstLook service contains all the metadata associated with each scene. ArcMap has tools to help the user better visualize the imagery based on the metadata.\u00a0 In the steps below, we\u2019ll group the images by date and visualize the scenes over Tacloban City.\n<ol>\n<li>Zoom in to Tacloban City where there\u2019s a high concentration of imagery. See the screenshot for the area of interest.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/7_ZoomTacloban.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33228\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/7_ZoomTacloban.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1061\" height=\"839\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>After you zoom in, use the select tool on the tools toolbar and select all the scenes in the data frame.<\/li>\n<li>Now, right-click the layer in the table of contents, choose\u00a0<strong>Selection &gt; Add Selected Rasters to Map<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the dialog box, give the Group a name such as\u00a0<strong>FirstLook WV2 Tacloban<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the dropdown, select\u00a0<strong>AcquisitionDate<\/strong>\u00a0for the Layer Name and click\u00a0<strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You\u2019ll now have a separate group layer with all the individual scenes listed by date, starting with the earliest.<\/p>\n<p>Tip: To collapse all the scenes in the group layer: Hold the\u00a0<strong>Ctrl<\/strong>\u00a0button on your keyboard, then click the minus sign next to one of the images. This will shorten your group layer for better organization.<\/p>\n<p>Tip: Hold the\u00a0<strong>Alt\u00a0<\/strong>button on the keyboard, then click the checkbox next the layer to turn on images one at a time. Go down the list of images in order to visualize the images with no overlap.<\/p>\n<p>*Optionally, right-click the new group and\u00a0<strong>save as a layer file<\/strong>\u00a0to reuse.<\/p>\n<p>Go back and change the\u00a0<strong>Query Definition<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>Layer<\/strong>\u00a0properties to visualize other sensors or combinations of sensors. Save your favorite Query Definitions as Layer files to save time in the future.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/files\/2013\/11\/8_ResultEnd.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\"
