Early in my career, I spent hours collecting data using a handheld GPS. I marked waypoints for hundreds of points of interest. I was one of those \u201ccool\u201d people who clipped a GPS to their backpack. <\/span>W<\/span>hen<\/span> smartphones started being used as an alternative to a dedicated GPS<\/span>, I was skeptical<\/span>. How could my phone perform as well as my GPS unit?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier this year, I was prepping for fieldwork in Guatemala <\/span>and <\/span>decided<\/span> to put it to the test. I took out my phone, marked waypoints, and did a comparison using my GPS unit. To my surprise, the smartphone performed as well as my GPS<\/span>\u2014<\/span>and it was significantly easier to export my data to my computer. <\/span>That\u2019s<\/span> when I decided to try <\/span><\/span>ArcGIS <\/span><\/span>QuickCapture<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, and now <\/span>I\u2019m a convert. I saved hours of time and found it easy to integrate the field data into ArcGIS StoryMaps.<\/span> Together, these tools allow you to create a seamless mobile-to-web workflow.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why collect <\/span>field<\/span> data?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

ArcGIS <\/span>QuickCapture<\/span><\/a>\u202fis Esri\u2019s rapid data collection app for field data collection. It simplifies collecting location-specific information, such as photos, notes, or observations. ArcGIS <\/span>QuickCapture<\/span> is particularly effective\u00a0<\/span><\/span>for photo-based workflows\u00a0such as infrastructure inspection, disaster response, field research, and even \u202fbiodiversity documentation<\/span>. Users can create customized projects with predefined data fields to collect data on the go.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After you collect data,\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> easy to\u00a0bring it into ArcGIS\u00a0<\/span>StoryMaps<\/span>.\u00a0This integration\u00a0<\/span>provides<\/span> context for the data and aids in decision-making. How to integrate ArcGIS <\/span>QuickCapture<\/span> and <\/span>StoryMaps<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

I\u2019ll<\/span> demonstrate<\/span> how you can integrate these two tools using <\/span>this <\/span>example <\/span>workflow <\/span>I used <\/span>recent<\/span>ly to produce a<\/span> story about <\/span><\/span>finding mushrooms in Maine.<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Create your ArcGIS QuickCapture project<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The first step is to create your data collection project in\u202f<\/span><\/span>ArcGIS QuickCapture<\/span><\/span><\/a>. If <\/span>you\u2019re<\/span> new to ArcGIS <\/span>QuickCapture<\/span>, I recommend starting with one of the many great\u202f<\/span><\/span>templates<\/span><\/span><\/a>. If you want to build a custom project from scratch, I recommend starting with an <\/span><\/span>existing feature layer<\/span><\/span> in <\/span>your <\/span>ArcGIS Online<\/span> account<\/span>. <\/span>Regardless of your approach, ensure your project includes a question requiring a photo.
