For example, if your dataset had 50+ fields, you might have found scrolling and sorting within the control\u2019s screen \u201creal-estate\u201d difficult. For those who were new to or used the <strong>field map<\/strong>\u00a0infrequently, you may have not realized you could switch between the <strong>Source <\/strong>and <strong>Properties <\/strong>tabs. Or you may have asked yourself, \u201cwhat does the <strong>Merge<\/strong> <strong>Rule<\/strong> mean when I am not using the <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/tool-reference\/data-management\/merge.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Merge<\/strong><\/a> tool\u201d? We also received several requests from the <a href=\"https:\/\/community.esri.com\/t5\/arcgis-pro-ideas\/idb-p\/arcgis-pro-ideas\/label-name\/geoprocessing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ArcGIS Pro Ideas Community<\/strong><\/a> to either change or enhance the <strong>field map<\/strong> with additional features.<\/p>\n<p>Starting in summer 2022, we reviewed all requirements, evaluated several design alternatives, and begun working on a new <strong>field map<\/strong> design. You can still create and specify the overall <strong>field map<\/strong> parameter using <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/arcpy\/classes\/fieldmappings.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>arcpy.FieldMappings<\/strong><\/a> classes, and configure each output field in an <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/arcpy\/classes\/fieldmap.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>arcpy.FieldMap<\/strong><\/a> class.<\/p>\n<h1><b>The Field Map parameter in Pro 3.2<\/b><\/h1>\n<h2>Field mapping on the tool dialog<\/h2>\n<p>In <strong>ArcGIS Pro 3.2<\/strong>, when you open a tool with a <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/help\/analysis\/geoprocessing\/basics\/field-map.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>field map<\/strong><\/a> parameter, you may notice that it now displays a list of field names with a small icon to the <em>left<\/em> of the field name, indicating the <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/help\/data\/geodatabases\/overview\/arcgis-field-data-types.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_5531C83A868B4326B597DA44C679F00B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>field type<\/strong><\/a>. There is a number to the <em>right<\/em> of the field name, indicating the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/help\/analysis\/geoprocessing\/basics\/field-map.htm#ESRI_SECTION2_299D55E7E89A4EC28FEE0BD75274B4F0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>source fields<\/strong><\/a> (if more than one) mapped to that field. Here, you can perform all tasks related to field management and mapping in one space.<\/p>\n<p>View or edit a fields <strong>Properties<\/strong> such as the name, alias, type, length and allow NULL values. Perform field matching by modifying a field\u2019s <strong>source field<\/strong>, that is the field from the input dataset that will transfer to the output field. Calculate statistics, concatenate <strong>source fields,<\/strong> or perform other actions by choosing an associated <strong>Action<\/strong> for the <strong>source fields. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are also some notable changes from the previous field map. <strong>Merge Rules<\/strong> are now referred to as <strong>Actions<\/strong>, because <a href=\"https:\/\/support.esri.com\/en-us\/gis-dictionary\/merging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>merging<\/strong><\/a> is associated with specific tools and behaviors in Pro.
