Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=1b243539f4514b6ba35e7d995890db1d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Hillshade<\/a> provides a default relief background in various basemaps (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=67372ff42cd145319639a99152b15bc3\">Topographic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=a52ab98763904006aa382d90e906fdd5\">Terrain with Labels<\/a>) that are available across the ArcGIS system. These layers are compiled using the best available datasets from open data sources, Esri Community Maps contributors, and commercial data providers. These layers in ArcGIS Online have just been improved by integrating Maxar Intelligence\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxar.com\/maxar-intelligence\/products\/precision3d-data-suite\">Precision3D<\/a> data, which is the most accurate 3D representation of Earth available on the commercial market.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Esri integrated Airbus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/3d-gis\/airbus-worlddem4ortho-in-esri-3d-elevation-services\/\">WorldDEM4Ortho 24m<\/a> in elevation layers and derivatives, which brought significant quality and accuracy improvements over SRTM 30m. WorldDEM4Ortho was a hybrid DSM\/DTM product where buildings were removed in urban areas, but vegetation\/forest heights remain. Though urban areas were flattened in WorldDEM4Ortho to provide a better surface for overlaying 3D buildings, in some instances, small hills in the urban areas were also flattened during the building removal process and the void filling\/smoothing resulted in heights which were either more elevated or depressed than actual.<\/p>\n<p>To further improve over WorldDEM4Ortho, we are excited to share that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=7029fb60158543ad845c7e1527af11e4\">Terrain 3D<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=0c69ba5a5d254118841d43f03aa3e97d\">TopoBathy 3D<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=1b243539f4514b6ba35e7d995890db1d\">World Hillshade<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=428539ef9cab4017b69d15a40a9ee98b\">World Hillshade (Dark)<\/a> layers are now enhanced with bare earth elevation data from Maxar&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxar.com\/maxar-intelligence\/products\/precision3d-data-suite\">Precision3D<\/a> for parts of the globe.\u00a0The Precision3D Digital Terrain Models (DTM) at 50 cm resolution are created by pairing Maxar\u2019s extensive archive of high-resolution satellite imagery with the company\u2019s patented 3D technology.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2024\/06\/MaxarPrecision3DCoverage_v2024r01.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first rollout of Maxar Precision3D<\/a> includes large parts of Asia and Africa along with a few areas in Europe, North America, South America and Australia covering approximately 27 million sq kms area (~10.4 million sq miles) as shown below. Terrain 3D and TopoBathy 3D are tiled elevation services that uses the LERC (Limited Error Raster Compression) tile format and are derived from World Elevation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=58a541efc59545e6b7137f961d7de883\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terrain<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=c753e5bfadb54d46b69c3e68922483bc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TopoBathy<\/a> respectively.\n\nA few weeks ago <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/2018\/01\/22\/airbus-worlddem4ortho-in-esri-world-elevation-services-and-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Elevation layers (Terrain &amp; TopoBathy) and Tools<\/a> were enhanced with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airbus.com\/newsroom\/press-releases\/en\/2017\/07\/airbus-releases-worlddem4ortho--the-most-accurate-elevation-mode.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Airbus WorldDEM4Ortho<\/a>. These updates are now rolled out to 3D elevation layers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=7029fb60158543ad845c7e1527af11e4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terrain 3D<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=0c69ba5a5d254118841d43f03aa3e97d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TopoBathy 3D<\/a>). Airbus WorldDEM4Ortho is a global dataset covering the entire earth\u2019s land surface (excluding the countries of Azerbaijan, DR Congo and Ukraine), which\u00a0has a resolution of 0.8 arc second (approx. 24 meters). It brings many quality improvements especially over urban areas in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, which were previously using SRTM 30 m dataset.\n\nSRTM is a digital surface model (DSM), which represents elevation values of the natural and built features on the earth surface such as buildings, vegetation, etc. Due to its DSM nature and coarser resolution, urban areas especially with dense and high rise buildings appear to have small hills or undulating surface. When you overlay 3D buildings\/objects on this undulating surface, it seems to be either sinking or floating on the ground. In Airbus WorldDEM4Ortho, urban areas are flattened to give DTM-like product thus\u00a0providing much better surface than SRTM 30 m.
