Please review the changes to ensure your applications remain supported.<\/p>\n<p>With the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/developers\/announcements\/whats-new-in-esri-developers-june-2024\/\">latest release<\/a>, significant changes have been made to how developers create credentials to access secure resources in ArcGIS.\u00a0This article guides you through the updates and provides essential information to help you understand the new experience.<\/p>\n<p>In this article we will discuss:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#motivations\">Motivations for change<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#status-of-existing-api-keys\">The status of existing API keys and apps<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#whats-new\">What\u2019s new<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#getting-started\">New developer guide resources<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#conclusion\">Conclusion<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"motivations\">Motivations for change<\/h2>\n<p>Our primary focus was to make API keys more functional, performant, and secure:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>We added better permission granularity than OAuth credentials to help support server-side workflows and automation.<\/li>\n<li>We wanted to improve the UI across developers.arcgis.com and arcgis.com to simplify the experience.<\/li>\n<li>And lastly, we wanted to deliver a better API key developer experience without disrupting existing API keys or apps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"status-of-existing-api-keys\">The status of existing API keys and apps<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW86071664 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW86071664 BCX0\">The new experience is available starting June 27, 2024. In the documentation, when referring to API keys created before this date, they will be referred to as API keys (legacy)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart SCXW86071664 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"border-left: #e6a700;padding: 6px 25px;background-color: #fff8e6;margin-top: 7px;font-size: 0.9rem;border-radius: 6.4px;border-left-width: 6.4px;border-left-style: solid\">\u26a0\ufe0f\u00a0<strong>Important Update: <\/strong>API keys (legacy) will be fully deprecated and disabled in June 2026. If your applications still rely on these keys, you must migrate to the new API key credentials before this date to avoid service interruptions. We strongly recommend updating your credentials as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what this means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>API keys (legacy) are in mature support, replaced by API key credentials as of June 2024.<\/li>\n<li>Your existing applications using API keys (legacy) <strong>will continue to function as usual until June\u00a02026<\/strong>. They won&#8217;t be disrupted by these changes until API keys (legacy) are fully deprecated on June 2026.<\/li>\n<li>You won&#8217;t be able to create or edit API keys (legacy) any longer. However, they will remain functional until June 2026 or until you migrate them to API key credentials.<\/li>\n<li>You can migrate your existing API keys (legacy) to API key credentials at any time. To learn more, go to <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.arcgis.com\/documentation\/security-and-authentication\/api-key-authentication\/api-key-legacy\/\">API key (legacy) retirement<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"whats-new\">What\u2019s new<\/h2>\n<h3>Enhanced functionality<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Unified API key experience<\/strong>: Developers building applications with ArcGIS Online now have the same API key functionality as those using ArcGIS Location Platform. You can grant (scope) API keys to specific services and content items, offering more precise control.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scoped OAuth credentials<\/strong>: OAuth credentials can now be granted (scoped) privileges, providing better security and usability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Improved performance and security<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Faster validation<\/strong>: We have optimized API key validation for faster HTTP responses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Expiration times<\/strong>: API keys now have expiration times of up to one year. This ensures that keys are regularly updated and limits the risk of long-term exposure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>One-time display<\/strong>: API keys are now displayed only once upon creation. This makes it crucial to save your API key securely when it is generated, as you will not be able to view it again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>New workflows<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Unified credential creation<\/strong>: Developers building applications with ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Location Platform must now sign in to <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.arcgis.com\/documentation\/glossary\/portal\/\">their portal<\/a> at ArcGIS.com to create credentials. Note: Learn more about sign in and dashboard changes <a href=\"https:\/\/links.esri.com\/WhatsNewInDevDoc0624\">in this article<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Updated key strings<\/strong>: Modifying the expiration date or privileges for API key credentials or OAuth credentials will change the key string.<\/li>\n<li><strong>API key rotation<\/strong>: API keys come with built-in support for key rotation. Meaning secondary API keys have been introduced.
