But what about the gorgeous spots in the middle of nowhere? The ones that are hard to believe exist without some form of human or supernatural intervention? And so, with that in mind, I set out to map the Devil\u2019s real estate portfolio.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Collecting Data Points<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To perhaps nobody\u2019s surprise, I couldn\u2019t find an existing dataset with the locations of all places called \u201cDevil\u2019s ______\u201d so instead I set out to build my own. A query in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edits.nationalmap.gov\/apps\/gaz-domestic\/public\/search\/names\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">USGS\u2019s Geographic Names Information System<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> returned 1356 locations and while I would have loved to map all of them, I opted for what I\u2019ll call my top 50 spots.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The list grew organically from places I had heard about in the past from friends or places that otherwise caught my eye while doing research for this map. I was hesitant to use a different color for each of the 50 points or, for that matter, the 48 states of the continental U.S. Instead, I opted to use the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/tool-reference\/cartography\/calculate-color-theorem-field.htm\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Calculate Color Theorem Field<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> tool. This is a new tool in the Cartographic Refinement toolset available with ArcGIS Pro 3.4 which populates a field that can be used to symbolize polygons so that no two adjacent polygons are the same color using a small number of colors. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The tool asks for only 2-parameters: Input Features and Field Name (which can be an existing field or a new one to be created). I wanted to give this map a Halloweeny feel without falling into the traditional black and orange we see everywhere. That being said, I did start with a pumpkin orange tone (# EB6123) and went up to a maroon (# AE4832) and down to a lighter tangerine (# EF7E1E). for this map, I got to learn about some awesome spots around the continental US and the folklore that give them their names. Here are my top 3 favorite ones:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Devil\u2019s Hole (NV)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Detached unit of Death Valley National Park, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/deva\/learn\/nature\/devils-hole.htm\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">home to the only naturally occurring population of Devils Hole pupfish (<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">cyprinodon diabolis<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. When I first learned about this, I was mind blown. There is an entire species of fish that only exists in the upper 80 feet of this cavern&#8230; that\u2019s it! Although still endangered, the Devils Hole pupfish population saw a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/deva\/learn\/news\/devils-hole-spring-2024.htm\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">25-year high earlier this year<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and I\u2019m waiting with bated breath to know if the trend continues with this fall\u2019s pupfish count.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Devil\u2019s Sinkhole State Natural Area (TX)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vertical cavern housing (literal) millions of bats&#8230; what?! But that\u2019s not all, the 3-million bats <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tpwd.texas.gov\/state-parks\/devils-sinkhole\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">emerge in a swirling mass in search of food on warm nights<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Needless to say, this is high up on my bucket list and I can only imagine what seeing that many bats emerge from a cavern at sunset must feel like, but it is definitely an experience worth having.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Devil\u2019s Kettle (MN)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMysterious\u201d waterfall that seemingly disappears into a hole. Locals allegedly would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/story\/2017\/02\/28\/hydrologists-solve-minnesota-devils-kettle-falls-mystery\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">throw all sorts of items into the kettle<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to see if they would resurface downstream but were never seen again. In 2017, a dye tracing experiment was set to be conducted to prove the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/scientists-think-they-ve-solved-the-mystery-of-devil-s-kettle-falls\/414996694\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Minnesota department of natural resources\u2019 theory on what happens to the water<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but from what I could find, the experiment was never actually conducted.
