Those of us that know it best think about it often. I swear...the maps I've seen. Sometimes it gives me pause, though, Firefly being free, belonging to every cartographer who wants to take a chance. I have to remind myself that some map styles aren't meant to be caged. Their radiance is just too bright. And the part of me that knows it was a sin to keep it to myself does rejoice<\/a>.\n\nSo here it is<\/a>. Do interesting things with your data.\n\nThe Firefly style<\/a> consists of the following point, line, and polygon symbols, packaged up for your adventures in ArcGIS Pro...\n\n\"\"<\/a>\n\nThere are 20 pre-defined colors available for each symbol (but there is no reason you can't tweak them for whatever visualization scheme you cook up). Here is a reference of their numbering...\n\n\"\"<\/a>\n\nTo add these to your Pro project, first download the Firefly.stylx<\/a> file and save it to your machine. From your project's Catalog panel, right-click the Styles<\/a> category and choose to add a style<\/em>.\n\n\"\"<\/a>\n\nPoint it to your Firefly.stylx file and you are good to go. Thereafter, the firefly styles will be available in the project via the Symbology panel's Gallery.\n\n\"\"<\/a>\n\nSo many possibilities. But where to start?\n

Points<\/h2>\nHere's a look at the standard Firefly point symbol, in this case showing, obviously, Taco Bell locations scaled by revenue...\n\n\"\"<\/a>\n\nBut sometimes you want to turn your Firefly point features up to eleven. I've got you covered. There is an alternative version with a twinkly lens flare shimmer sort of thing going on. Like in this map of luminescent earthquakes...\n\n\"\"<\/a>\n

Lines<\/h2>\nFirefly has two line styles. But, again, you can totally play with the Symbol settings to teach it whatever tricks you need. Here is the standard, solid, line illustrated in this map of glowtastic graticules...\n\n\"\"<\/a>\n\nBut sometimes you just need a dashed line. So here is an example of the dashed Firefly line style applied to contour lines in the Pacific Northwest...\n\n\"\"<\/a>\n

Polygons<\/h2>\nHere is a look at the Firefly polygon style. It is a glowing boundary with a faint fill, applied to these Mediterranean bathymetric zones, submitted for your approval...\n\n\"\"<\/a>\n\nBut when you have adjacent polygons, which is often the case with human geography data, the glowing edges of the Firefly polygons can bleed into, or overlap, each other and sort of make a mess. So here is an alternate version of the polygon fill with only an inner<\/em> glow, as evidenced by these hexbins of aggregated Chipotle locations...\n\n\"\"<\/a>\n

Basemaps<\/h2>\nAh, basemaps. When it comes to Firefly cartography, the basemap is a big player. A firefly basemap ought to be dark and nearly devoid of color. Conveniently, we have a Firefly global image service<\/a> that you can use as a basemap. If that's too busy, then I recommend Dark Gray Canvas vector tiles as an alternate.\n

Thematics<\/h2>\nJust because there is a spectral set of colors available, please don't use all of them in a thematic map. The rainbow color scheme has lots of problems<\/a> for perception in scientific visualizations. I recommend using up to 6<\/strong> consecutive firefly colors if you are putting together a classed thematic map. Any more than that and you start to span into another dominant hue and perception diminishes.\n\n\"\"<\/a>\n\nIf you need contrasting colors, the colors opposite each other on this wheel tend to be differentiated well. Of course be careful<\/a> to avoid colors that are particularly problematic for those with color-deficient vision.\n

No Color<\/h2>\nDon't want a color but still want a glowy Firefly map? No worries; there is a non-colorized version of each symbol, just look at this map of top college football prospects, scaled by player size...\n\n\"\"<\/a>\n\nHappy Firefly Mapping! Hello again! This is the second blog post about pasting properties between feature layers. If you haven\u2019t read the first blog<\/a> yet, I strongly recommend reading it before diving into this one. That way, we\u2019ll be on the same page.<\/p>\n

If time isn\u2019t on your side, here\u2019s the quick and short of it: if you have ArcGIS Pro 3.2 or later, it is possible to copy the properties of a feature layer(*) or standalone table, and paste those properties to another layer or table. But like the title suggests, we\u2019re getting specific<\/em> \u2013 and what better way to enjoy the summer (or winter – I see you, Southern Hemisphere) than with some new knowledge? We made an exciting update to this workflow with the release of ArcGIS Pro 3.4.<\/p>\n

Update to ‘Paste Properties’<\/h3>\n

ArcGIS Pro versions 3.2 and 3.3 copy all properties from the source and pastes them to the target. With ArcGIS Pro 3.4 and later, you can choose a subset of properties to paste instead<\/em>. We recognize that, in many cases, you don\u2019t want to copy all properties \u2013 there\u2019s a lot of them. So it was only natural to break them down into smaller groups so you can grab specific properties from a layer and leave the rest.<\/p>\n

The workflow is almost the same as before. Right-click a feature layer or table in the Contents<\/strong> pane, and select Copy<\/strong>. Then, select the target layer or table, and right-click it. If you hover over the Paste Properties<\/strong> command, a pull-right arrow extends a menu of property categories. In the What\u2019s New in ArcGIS Pro 3.4 recap video<\/a>, you can watch a short demonstration of this workflow, using county health rankings data provided by the state of Illinois. It shows how to copy and paste display filter properties, and then symbology properties, between the 2023 and 2020 feature layers. Direct comparisons can then be made between those years \u2013 all without touching attribute data. You can still apply all layer properties by clicking the Paste Properties<\/strong> command. All properties of the target layer are overwritten by those of the parent layer. However, if you want to save certain properties and overwrite others, choose from one of these subgroups instead.<\/p>\n

The One Caveat<\/h3>\n

As for that little asterisk next to \u201cfeature layers\u201d in the second paragraph of the blog – what\u2019s up? Well, feature layers usually comprise points, polylines, or polygons. But a \u2018feature layer\u2019 can also be annotation, or dimensions, or subtypes\u2026 and some others, too.<\/p>\n

As of ArcGIS Pro 3.5.x, annotation and dimension layers do not support pasting properties between layers. Subtype group layers and subtype group tables do support this workflow, but do not include some subgroups of properties. Consult the ArcGIS Pro help documentation<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n
