been glad to see the number of voices talking about the great work we are doing grow as well.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can read blogs about <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3DAndOnlineInEsriBlogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D enhancements in ArcGIS Online<\/a>, the new\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2018ProElevation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elevation surface experience in ArcGIS Pro<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/developers\/mapping\/whats-new-in-the-arcgis-runtime-sdk-100-3-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D updates in ArcGIS Runtime<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Our teams publish story maps to show you <a href=\"https:\/\/arcg.is\/yTSCe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what&#8217;s new in product and tech areas, such as the Scene Viewer.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>You can also see lots of great content on other social media such as <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3DAtEsriTwitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter and LinkedIn<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>We have <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2018Esri3DUC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dozens of sessions, talks, and ad hoc presentations<\/a> covering 3D at the UC this year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So that the highlights don&#8217;t get lost in the details, I&#8217;ve listed some of the top things to pay attention to here.\u00a0 These are some of the biggest topics that customers have been asking us about and it&#8217;s great to be able to speak with users about so many of these diverse 3D-related efforts.\u00a0 Some of these items include topics that have been and corporations adopt Building Information Management (BIM) globally to drive more efficiency in the trillions of USD of investment required to propel us sustainably into the 21st century, asset owners and construction and design consultants have realized that location is an essential component of successful BIM projects.<\/p>\n<p>Esri has jumped into the BIM market with both feet, educating partners and customers, developing software to support better integration of design and location, and launching an industry changing alliance with Autodesk.\u00a0 This years&#8217;s UC caps about two and a half years of effort to get the BIM story rolling at UC and I couldn&#8217;t be happier that we&#8217;re where we are.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The new <a tools<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For years, every day people have been able to touch things, see shadows, and change them in 3D games.\u00a0 It&#8217;s natural that GIS users should expect to do the same with the 3D data that represents their real world environments. Since the 2017 UC, we&#8217;ve seen a rollout of interactive analytical tools across the ArcGIS platform.\u00a0 These include inter-visibility tools in ArcGIS Pro and Esri CityEngine, 3D measurement tools in the ArcGIS API for JavaScript.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visit the ArcGIS Pro island and the 3D Showcase in the UC Expo hall to see the intervisibility tools at work<\/li>\n<li>Nathan Shephard will capabilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Two years ago, I was cornered after a talk on 3D by 5 or 6 users who complained that when it came to underground, we had nothing.\u00a0 We&#8217;re trying hard to change that and this year you&#8217;ll be able to take a look at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The ability to navigate underground in the Scene Viewer in global scenes and the ability to manipulate the transparency of the ground surface both in the UI and in the API<\/li>\n<li>A new experience for manipulating surfaces in ArcGIS Pro<\/li>\n<li>The new slice exploratory tool in ArcGIS Pro that specification<\/a> adopted by the\u00a0Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) as a Community Standard.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve seen numerous partners and others in the community start to produce I3S content that is directly usable in ArcGIS products.\u00a0 We&#8217;re also seeing a ton of other 3D content, such as point clouds, IoT, and reality capture data being integrated into GIS for whole Now, with the new 10.6 release, you can enjoy an even greater collection with a significant increase in content from previous releases. As our world is ever-changing, so is Living Atlas content, and we\u2019ll review some of the highlights in today\u2019s blog.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/1.png\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-95311 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/1.png\" alt=\"Living Atlas highlights\" width=\"1000\" height=\"654\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What is Living Atlas of the World?<\/h2>\n<p>Living Atlas is a rich collection of ready-to-use, authoritative content, from maps, layers, and scenes to apps, Story Maps, and more. For example, if you need to find near real-time traffic speeds on an Atlanta freeway one day and a 3D scene of Linz, Austria the next, Living Atlas has you covered.<\/p>\n<p>These items are available for all members of your ArcGIS Enterprise deployment for enrichment, analysis, use in apps, maps and more. You can utilize Living Atlas content as is, or enhance it by incorporating your own data and layers.<\/p>\n<p>Living Atlas content is available in ArcGIS Enterprise by default, and can be configured to bring in content at the subscriber and\/or premium levels. You can also choose to download boundary layers from My Esri and host as feature layers in your Enterprise portal (highlighted a little further on in the blog). For more information on default, subscriber and premium levels of Living Atlas content, see Bern\u2019s blog <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/2017\/03\/14\/living-atlas-subscriber-content\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>New content in 10.6<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>U.S. demographic data<\/h3>\n<p>What was the average amount spent on retail goods in New York City in May? How about the market potential for D.C. residents to eat organic food? New 2017 demographic data will help you search for and answer these types of questions. Additional demographic layers include political affiliations, online banking patterns, commute times, pet spending, and more. That\u2019s right \u2013 if you need to determine if the amount spent on pet food in Milwaukee is higher or lower than the national average, you can do so using Living Atlas layers. Demographic information is fantastic for a range of analyses at different scales, whether you are interested in trends for a block group or for a whole state. Zoom in and out of your map to see variations in patterns based on different areas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/2.png\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-95303 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/2.png\" alt=\"U.S. demographic data in Living Atlas\" width=\"816\" height=\"547\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Landscape layers<\/h3>\n<p>Landscape analysis is a crucial part of civil engineering, land use planning, natural resource management, and ecosystem analysis and monitoring. The ArcGIS Enterprise 10.6 release contains updated versions of SSURGO (Soil Survey Geographic Database) data, which includes layers with attributes on soil hydrology, chemistry, texture, density, and nutrients. These beautiful layers provide all types of information on soil composition around the globe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/3.png\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-95308 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/3.png\" alt=\"Landscape layer data in Living Atlas\" width=\"1049\" height=\"598\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also new in 10.6 are updates to NLCD (National Land Cover Database) imagery layers, including vegetation types, agricultural use, and impervious surfaces. These layers can be used for a wide variety of mapping analyses (and are quite visually stunning!)<\/p>\n<h3>Tile layers<\/h3>\n<p>Take advantage of vector tile layers and web maps using the improved tiling scheme WGS84 Geographic, Version 2. This includes tile layers such as the World Navigation Map, Hybrid Reference Layer, dark and light gray canvas layers, and street maps. This new tiling scheme is enhanced for precision, and more than 20 items are included in the 10.6 release. Try out vector tile layers today and let us know what you think!<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Boundary layers<\/h3>\n<p>The 10.6 release brings in updates to boundary layers for a number of countries. Boundary layers are polygons that contain various levels of demographic information about a country, such as population or land area\/size. They are also available at different ranges based on the country, from counties to provinces.\u00a0 These layers are great for spatial analysis, such as aggregating data within a certain geographic boundary. They can also be used in scenes, apps and maps (as displayed below within a web map in ArcGIS Enterprise):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/4.png\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/4.png\" alt=\"Boundary layer data in Living Atlas\" width=\"1584\" height=\"830\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are also approximately 130 boundary layers available in My Esri to download and host as feature layers in ArcGIS Enterprise. If you are interested in these layers, head over to My Esri to take a look at the ones available.<\/p>\n<h2>Mature support items in the Living Atlas<\/h2>\n<p>Keep in mind that Living Atlas content does have a lifecycle, which means some items may reach a state of mature support, and may ultimately be retired.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, it is recommended that after you upgrade your Living Atlas content, you do a quick audit of the layers you are using in your maps and apps to determine if any have been tagged as mature support. Terrain 3D and TopoBathy 3D are tiled elevation services that uses the LERC (Limited Error Raster Compression) tile format and are derived from World Elevation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=58a541efc59545e6b7137f961d7de883\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terrain<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=c753e5bfadb54d46b69c3e68922483bc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TopoBathy<\/a> respectively.\n\nA few weeks ago <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/2018\/01\/22\/airbus-worlddem4ortho-in-esri-world-elevation-services-and-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Elevation layers (Terrain &amp; TopoBathy) and Tools<\/a> were enhanced with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airbus.com\/newsroom\/press-releases\/en\/2017\/07\/airbus-releases-worlddem4ortho--the-most-accurate-elevation-mode.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Airbus WorldDEM4Ortho<\/a>. These updates are now rolled out to 3D elevation layers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=7029fb60158543ad845c7e1527af11e4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terrain 3D<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=0c69ba5a5d254118841d43f03aa3e97d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TopoBathy 3D<\/a>). Airbus WorldDEM4Ortho is a global dataset covering the entire earth\u2019s land surface (excluding the countries of Azerbaijan, DR Congo and Ukraine), which\u00a0has a resolution of 0.8 arc second (approx. 24 meters). It brings many quality improvements especially over urban areas in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, which were previously using SRTM 30 m dataset.\n\nSRTM is a digital surface model (DSM), which represents elevation values of the natural and built features on the earth surface such as buildings, vegetation, etc. Due to its DSM nature and coarser resolution, urban areas especially with dense and high rise buildings appear to have small hills or undulating surface. When you overlay 3D buildings\/objects on this undulating surface, it seems to be either sinking or floating on the ground. In Airbus WorldDEM4Ortho, urban areas are flattened to give DTM-like product thus\u00a0providing much better surface than SRTM 30 m.
