There is a lot of information in this data\u2026 maybe more than you need! But there are several ways to be selective in how you use it.<\/p>\n<p>For this exercise I have created a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/mapviewer\/index.html?webmap=77e91b6dee9b4bb9aa7ea1d3263ff3bc\">prototype web map<\/a><\/strong>. You are welcome to use them, but you can replace them with your own if you prefer.<\/p>\n<h2>The Data<\/h2>\n<p>Open the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=bf32058955d541f190bce89b9c401bc1\">Places Resource VT Layer<\/a> <\/strong>into the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vtse.arcgis.com\/\">Vector Tile Style Editor<\/a><\/strong> (VTSE) and have a look at the \u2018Places\u2019 group. It\u2019s daunting! Make sure to save a copy to your account before you start work.<\/p>\n<h3>Finding Specific \u2018Places\u2019 Layers<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>If you have a good sense of where your layer is located, then go hunting for it in \u2018Edit Layer Styles\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>OR<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you know what symbol it uses, then click on an example on the map. The relevant category in \u2018Edit Layer Styles\u2019 will open. In many cases we use the same symbol across multiple categories, so you may need to hunt some more for the exact layer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>OR<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you know an actual location of an example in your layer, you can click on it in the map, and it will take you directly to that layer in \u2018Edit Layer using \u2018Museum\u2019 for this exercise:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I know it\u2019s in the \u2018Recreation\u2019 group, so I can switch off all other \u2018Places\u2019 groups.<\/li>\n<li>I want to hide all other symbols in the \u2018Recreation\u2019 group, but there are almost 100 of them!<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 So, I can switch off the whole group, then go in and switch the \u2018Museum\u2019 layer back on. You should see just that symbol on your map.<\/li>\n<li>That assumes that you only want the one layer. If you don\u2019t plan to use any of the other symbols it will make the JSON and the &#8216;Edit Layer Styles&#8217; option a lot easier to navigate.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Go to \u2018Edit JSON\u2019, Search (Control \u2018F\u2019) for &#8220;visibility&#8221;: &#8220;none&#8221;. This will highlight examples of that text in the code. In turn, that identifies the symbol layers that are switched off.<\/li>\n<li>Select and delete those entire code sections. Be sure to do it cleanly!<\/li>\n<li>Update the map. It will open the relevant layer in \u2018Edit Layer Styles\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Open \u2018Edit JSON\u2019. You will be taken to the correct section of code, and the layer title will be highlighted.<\/li>\n<li>Copy that whole section of code.<\/li>\n<li>Paste it into the code in your target map (taking care to position it in a suitable place in the layer hierarchy).<\/li>\n<li>Update the image. If there is a problem with your pasted code it will warn you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Adding symbols<\/h3>\n<p>It is very likely that the Sprite document for your target map does not include this new symbol. The layer will appear, and possibly a label, but nothing else.
