Writing data to the memory workspace is often considerably faster than writing to a database or folder.<\/li>\n<li>You are running a workflow with many steps, and you do not want to manage or keep intermediate datasets, rather, you only need the final output dataset. Use memory to temporarily store intermediate output datasets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s important to efficiently manage your data to keep your projects organized. Without a clear strategy you run the risk of cluttered folders, redundant datasets, and it can be difficult to keep track of different results run at different times. The memory workspace can be used for faster processing as well as improved data management and organization!<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #2f5496\">What\u2019s the catch?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>There are some precautions you may want to take when using the memory workspace:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Because memory datasets are stored in the system RAM your system may run low on memory if you write large datasets to the workspace. This can negatively impact processing performance.<\/li>\n<li>You cannot write output files like <code>.shp<\/code>, <code>.txt<\/code>, <code>.kml<\/code>, etc. or folders to the memory workspace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/help\/analysis\/geoprocessing\/basics\/the-in-memory-workspace.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_E1FB782E45B34B4498788E36170052CC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more about memory workspace limitations<\/a><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #2f5496\">How to write to memory and Pro 3.5 enhancements<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>You can utilize the memory workspace from the tool dialog box, <strong>ModelBuilder<\/strong>, or even in <strong>Python<\/strong> scripts! You can use the following methods to write any output feature class, table, or raster to the memory workspace for faster processing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New in <strong>ArcGIS Pro 3.5<\/strong>, you can click the <strong>memory workspace<\/strong> button\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2025\/04\/MemoryWorkspace16.png\" alt=\"memory workspace\" \/> on an output parameter on the tool dialog box to automatically set the output path to <code>memory\\<\/code>.
