It uses AI to make the designated text clearer, summarize it, fix spelling and grammar errors, and\/or fit one of four general \u201ctones\u201d (formal, enthusiastic, informative, or casual).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span class=\"TextRun MacChromeBold SCXW73284477 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73284477 BCX0\">Generate a theme<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW73284477 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73284477 BCX0\"> \u2014 <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73284477 BCX0\">appears as one of the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73284477 BCX0\">initial<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73284477 BCX0\"> starting point options when creating a new theme. It responds to a written and\/or visual prompt by generating a theme with some color and font selections already made.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Insights panel also offers <strong>Suggestions<\/strong> on how to improve the experience of your story \u2014 for example, by checking images for captions, attribution, and alt text, or seeing if <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-storymaps\/author-and-share\/add-story-navigation.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">story navigation<\/a> is turned on and a story language has been set. These suggestions are <em>not<\/em> powered by AI, but rather by good, old-fashioned algorithms, so I won&#8217;t go into too much detail about them in this post, but it&#8217;s worth giving them a look and heeding their advice.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW37878414 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart The alt text suggestions produced by the ArcGIS StoryMaps Assistant generally land really close to the mark, but you should always review them to ensure that they\u2019re conveying all the information about an image that is relevant to its place in the story. For example, a specific item of clothing worn by a person in a photograph might be the key element of that photo if it\u2019s in a story about, say, fashion trends in a certain country. It\u2019s not going to do research for you or write your story for you.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What it <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> do is modify targeted portions of text that you\u2019ve already written to help add that final level of polish to a story. For instance, I know I have an affinity for sentences that can get a bit long-winded and prose that can drift in the direction of purple. There\u2019s great value in using, say, the <strong>Enhance<\/strong> tool&#8217;s<b> Readability <\/b>action to make a text passage clearer and more concise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As mentioned above, taking a look at some of the Insights assistant metrics, such as readability level and tone, can offer some hints about which of these <em>Refine your writing<\/em> capabilities might have a positive effect on your story.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What\u2019s especially nice is you can apply multiple tools and actions in one <em>Refine your writing<\/em> session and see each iteration of the revised text before deciding which version works best for you. And you also don&#8217;t need to fully commit to replacing the original text right away; you can instead opt to <strong>Insert<\/strong> the revised text above or below the original text in the story builder<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. There are <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW257638524 BCX0\">virtually infinite<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW257638524 BCX0\"> combinations of colors, fonts, and other story elements, after all; it can be tough even knowing where to start. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW257638524 BCX0\">That\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW257638524 BCX0\"> where the ArcGIS Assistant comes in \u2014 but having to fill out a free-form prompt field can be an anxiety-inducing exercise in and of itself. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW257638524 BCX0\">So<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW257638524 BCX0\">here&#8217;s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW257638524 BCX0\"> some advice about writing prompts for the <em>Generate a theme<\/em> capability that will hopefully make it feel less daunting:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW4030718 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW4030718 BCX0\">The<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW4030718 BCX0\"><em> Generate a theme<\/em> capability<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW4030718 BCX0\">\u00a0is designed to parse out keywords and match them to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW4030718 BCX0\">different colors<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW4030718 BCX0\">, fonts, basemaps, and block styles. That means you <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW4030718 BCX0\">don\u2019t<\/span> <\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW4030718 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW4030718 BCX0\">need<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW4030718 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW4030718 BCX0\"> to enter prompts in the form of a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW4030718 BCX0\">full-sentence<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW4030718 BCX0\"> description. In fact, prompts are more likely to be effective when presented as a series of comma-separated values, e.g.: \u201cBiodiversity, ecosystem, invasive species.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW97741706 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW97741706 BCX0\">If there is a certain design element that you know you would like to have incorporated \u2014 for instance, \u201cdark background\u201d or \u201csans serif fonts,\u201d you can include that in the prompt, too.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>And, of course, you can upload an image that the assistant will use to create a theme (and this method can work in conjunction with a written prompt if you want to provide more detail or parameters on top of the image).<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW67830541 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW67830541 BCX0\">Note that you can ask the ArcGIS Assistant to regenerate a different theme based on the same prompt if the first <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart CommentHighlightPipeRest CommentHighlightRest SCXW67830541 BCX0\">result<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW67830541 BCX0\">isn\u2019t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW67830541 BCX0\"> quite doing it for you.
