It is designed to help administrators and managers ensure their ArcGIS Enterprise deployments are working efficiently by reducing and preventing system downtime, resulting in operational cost savings.<\/p>\n<p>One of the advantages offered by ArcGIS Monitor is that it provides comprehensive status information for all registered assets in the enterprise GIS. Assets can include: enterprise portals, GIS servers, web services, the ArcGIS Data Store (relational), databases, geodatabases, and host machines. This allows admins to assess the health of GIS deployments and quickly identify potential issues. A component can have one of eight possible statuses: <em>nominal<\/em>, <em>info<\/em>, <em>warning<\/em>, <em>critical<\/em>, <em>incident active<\/em>, <em>monitoring off<\/em>, <em>alerting off<\/em>, and <em>no data<\/em>. The first four statuses (<em>nominal<\/em>, <em>info<\/em>, <em>warning<\/em>, and <em>critical)<\/em> reflect if the most recently collected metrics data violates the alerting rules set for a metric. The next three (<em>incident active<\/em>, <em>monitoring off<\/em>, and <em>alerting off)<\/em> indicate that the component is part of an active <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/monitor\/latest\/get-started\/windows\/incidents.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">incident<\/a> configured in Monitor (i.e., a time period where reporting is turned off, such as a scheduled maintenance window) and metric data collection is paused. And the last status: <em>no data<\/em> indicates Monitor was unable to collect data. To learn more about each status type, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/monitor\/latest\/get-started\/linux\/manage-components.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manage components help topic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It would be optimal for all registered Monitor components to have <em>nominal<\/em> status, which implies that the system is working normally (as configured). This blog discusses how a registered component\u2019s status is determined and explains how alerts work in Monitor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Component Status <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Selecting a component in the components table will display its <em>Overview<\/em> subtab, which shows key metrics for the component. This triggered the critical alert and changed GIS Server 1\u2019s component status from warning to critical. On the left side panel, note the critical alert was opened on 9\/12\/25 at 3:25 pm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Side note:<\/strong> The time range displayed in Figure 6 does not include 3:25 pm, so its data point does not appear on the serial chart. The blue solid line represents the collected data, it does not extend earlier than 3:30 pm in the chart, because the 3:25 pm data point is not shown.<\/p>\n<p>On the <em>Alerts<\/em> page, underneath the serial chart, the option to add comments is available (not shown in Figure 6). This is meant for admins to add a comment about the alert if desired. Comments can be useful for record keeping purposes or for admins that work in a collaborative setting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do Alerts work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For all registered components in ArcGIS Monitor, admins can configure and enable alerts for any collected metric. You can view all the metrics for a component and their respective alert rules by navigating to the <em>Monitoring<\/em> page &gt; select a component &gt; <em>Metrics<\/em> subtab. For example, the metrics for GIS Server 1 are shown in Figure 7; you can learn more about each metric in the <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/monitor\/latest\/get-started\/windows\/register-arcgis-server.htm#GUID-F35C300C-6435-406D-8450-82FF186F7A38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ArcGIS Server metrics<\/a> help topic. The chart\u2019s status pill indicator changes back to nominal and the component status returns to nominal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Side note 2:<\/strong> The number of data points used by the \u201ctrailing assessment\u201d is determined by the <em>samples<\/em> parameter for the alert condition. For example, if the alert condition\u2019s samples parameter was set to 6, then the \u201ctrailing assessment\u201d would use the 6 latest data points.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the samples parameter, alerts can also be affected by a component\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/monitor\/latest\/get-started\/windows\/observers.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">observer<\/a> interval. Every registered Monitor component has\u00a0observers\u00a0which are responsible for collecting attribute and metric information about the component. In this case, the <em>metrics<\/em> observer for the GIS Server 1 component has an interval of 5 mins (the default), which is the frequency at which the observer collects data from the component. You can adjust the observer interval (to be more or less frequent) and this would affect the time periods for the sample data points.<\/p>\n<p>All of these factors: alert condition aggregation and operator, alert threshold values, samples, and <em>metric<\/em> observer interval can affect how and when alerts are triggered on a component metric. Setting appropriate alert rules for metrics will depend on your business use cases and what is important to you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Configure Alerts for Multiple Components<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can also configure alert rules for the same metric for multiple components of the same type in ArcGIS Monitor. This is simply metadata for an alert and may be useful for admins to help manage alerts. When an alert is opened, it has a pending state, see Figures 4, 5, 6, and 15.
